Why Black People Must Use Sunscreen

Practicing dermatology in South Florida I see and treat a lot if sunburns on deeper skin tones! A sunburn 🔥looks and feels different on darker skin! Please wear and reapply sunscreen for prevention but here are some tips to know if this ever happens to you! ⚪️The affected area may not feel hot or painful ⚪️Darker skin may look dry and cracked instead of red ⚪️To prevent swelling, peeling and blisters think 💭CAVE C= Cold compress as soon as you notice the sunburn AV= Aloe Vera cream to soothe E= Emollients/ colloidal oats containing products to heal, calm and stop inflammation. Hope this helps!

We might be better equipped, but we are not impervious to the power of the sun. I definitely wear sunscreen as an adult, faithfully.

As a brown skinned BW, it only took me ONE time to get sun burned & a lesson was learned! It hurts to even shower properly😩 I do not play about applying sunscreen, esp on my face & when vacationing.

Don’t forget that not getting sun burns doesn’t mean that you cannot get skin cancer!!! These are two different things given by two different type of UVs!! And skin cancer doesn’t forget anyone no matter what skin colour you are! Protect yourselves 💛🌞

I grew up in Africa, but man… nobody told me about the sun in Mexico 🥵. Burned my skin on my shoulders so bad, it cracked. It’s over 10 years and I haven’t forgotten.

If you’re peeling please do not PULL. either cut it or let it natural fall off. Pulling leads to discoloration and sunspots. Healthcare professional here

Right I’m so sick of hearing BP say they don’t burn.. but then we end up seeing AA patients with skin cancer because they never believed they needed SPF

I absolutely can and have burned ugly, it just takes longer than a fair skinned person. The person peeling off strips of skin was very relatable. Folks can call me what they want, but my Black self absolutely wears my sunscreen!

Some of us get skin rashes because of heat. So other problems occur. If you feel you need it, then use it.

I’m black and I learned the hard way. I was outside doing sprints on the track in the summer. My skin was literally red and burnt! It started peeling off eventually (but on the bright side, underneath the peel was brighter smoother clear skin lol) It’s like I got a chemical peel for the free 😂❤

Many doctors miss signs of skin cancer on patients with dark skin tones or more melanin because it is not as common. Keep an eye on your skin. Protect it. Stay well.

My Aunt just recently told me about wearing tinted sunscreen. As a child I always used to say " Black people do not wear sunscreen " but my MeMa ( grandmother ) gave me a lecture that we do need sunscreen because anybody can get skin cancer from the sun. To this very day I still put on sunscreen ❤.

Even before sunscreens, black people had wide brimmed hats, long sleeve clothing and shaded trees to keep their skins from direct sun light. We were taught to do our chores early in the morning before the sun was too hot in our villages, then go to the shops after 4pm closer to sunset in South Africa.

YES!!!

I recently moved from Miami to Houston and the sun/heat here is totally on a whole higher level. My skin wasn’t ready for it.

Just because our skin is more resilient than most, doesn't mean we have to make it work so hard!!! Wear the sunscreen and give you skin some extra TLC!
