A man's wife told her husband that their child was spoiled, "No", he said, "all children smell like that."

This is a perfect example of looking for a problem that isn't there.

I'm an only child who grew up to be an independent, well adjusted woman. I'm able to make friends easily because I was taught to socialize from outside the family unit and by spending a lot of time with adults as a child. I also have a wonderful bond with my parents as an adult. That's just my experience

As an only child I can tell you plenty of abuse comes your way from neighborhood kids who take abuse from their older siblings.

Only child here. My parents taught me their resourcefulness, told me their mistakes so I can learn from them and yes, they sheltered me in a way, but I'm glad they did. My parents being both from large families (9 siblings and 7 siblings) suffered some things due to their parents lack of attention.
Also, I know plenty of "boomers" with several siblings that are weak and emotionally immature. So I have to disagree with Dr. Peterson.

I'm one of 9 children. We're all very close and tough as nails because we have eachother. Never had a lot but my parents never left us without anything. When they died they both had all of their children around their bed praying the rosary together. Have cousins that were spoiled rotten growing up..rooms full of toys, foreign holidays the works. And were happy to rub it in our faces. "Blow holing" as we say in Ireland. They barely talk to their parents now and thr dad still paying the sons rent. Crippled to have lost my parents as they were older but so glad we were so close to them and more importantly appreciated them.

Yes! Its dangerous because we’re stronger, more powerful and have more self esteem. Love, time and attention from parents isn’t equal overprotection, it gives strength, independence and compassion. I’m doing great as an adult with no siblings thank you.

There is lot of anger, resentment towards siblings and parents when you have to keep fighting for resources. Having parents who can provide you safety net financially is luxury so quality over quantity always

It's utterly amazing how jealous and selfish siblings can be as adults.

As an only child who is married to an only child and a parent of an only child, what complete and utter garbage!

Me with 20 siblings turns out to have social anxiety and no social skills
My niece has no siblings and is the most social kid ever and is most independent child ever with great communication skills and very social

I remember going to the store with my dad when I was 6 & some kid was having a complete meltdown, I asked my dad what was wrong with him & he said he's spoiled rotten. I said like milk? My dad laughed all the way home. Good times.

My sister in law seems better adjusted as an only child than 2 out of 3 siblings in my family. So only children can turn out fine. Some only children do seem spoiled though. I know lots of messed up kids with siblings also.

Then again, as an only child, you're the only target for an abusive parent🙃

I did that with my only child but he turned out great. He's 25 with a good job after his college degree.

Many years ago, my aunt grew up in a family of 14 kids. A friend of one of them lost both his parents, so their dad took in the extra boy at the request of his son. The dad said one more wouldn't make any difference, and saw to it that he grew up with proper values, learned a trade and went on to start a solid family of his own . Those siblings helped raise each other under the parents' guidance, and they all turned out decent, sensible human beings. The mind boggles.

When I started dating, I noticed that the guys who had no sisters had odd ideas about women and often treated them as less than human. It seems a lot of our problem children today are too isolated and lack normal human interaction.

Born 1962 to older parents. They already raised my brother (born 41) and sister (born 44)
and our household was settled, bills were being paid. But i was alone and my parents had already been fighting for 20 years. Thank god i grew up on a street with plenty of other children. I was socialized alone my first 6 or 7 years, mostly by a neurotic mother, rarely did any cousins visit because they all lived far away. Thank god the other boys on Jasmine Road straightened me out a little, and thank god for my sister that came and saved me a few times a year; otherwise i would have been a mass murderer sometime in the late 80s early 90s

Studies are pretty clear on this: only children receive far more resources and fair out far better than multi children homes. Contrary, but also inline with what Peterson said, parents tend to schedule their lives more, but this leads to more social interactions with friends and peers and with extended family, so the kids grow up with experiences that make them more understanding and compassionate of others and differences. They tend to be more confident and capable because of it, so I don’t know if he missed this literature or are ignoring it.

He is so right about having siblings and siblings do toughen you up.
