Don't forget, the Surface was only supposed to be a "reference" Windows tablet PC, but no other vendor could manage to make anything better. It wasn't meant to compete against legacy partners, but it absolutely embarrassed them. So, Microsoft kept rolling and now they have the only viable solution for the segment.

You know why it looks cheaper? It's probably because of the 16:9 aspect ratio. 16:10 is much closer to 1.618, the golden ratio that occurs in many things in nature and humans tend to find pretty.
Also the dark gray colour looks pretty slick.
