I really don't want Pokemon to have ownership over the game mechanic throw ball to summon or catch creature. That is not healthy for gaming and is integral to creature catching games.

It has nothing to do with copyright infringement. Nintendo is going after patent infringement

I think the fact that Nintendo is going through the Japanese court system limits its larger effect. It means that the case will be based on Japanese IP law, not US IP law. Not actually sure what the differences are between the two are but it should mean that the precedent from the outcome shouldn't affect any future cases in the US (or at least through the US court system). Like you say, since Pockepair is based in Japan it makes things easier since the JP courts have jurisdiction their production of the game. But if it were company outside of Japan the most the JP court could probably do is restrict imports into Japan. At any rate I think a lot of the analysis I've see was based on US IP law so didn't really account from this possibility.

Nintendo and Pokemon is a DEADLY combo. Imagine if Nintendo and Disney were to somehow team up, oh boy!

So many people saying it’s for copyright when in reality it’s patent infringement. It is unlikely Palworld is being sued for copyright infringement. Patent infringement is completely different

everyone: ZOMG ITS A COPYRIGHT LAWSUIT

EDIT: Yes, I'm aware I've mixed up the lawsuit and copyright stuff, but I think my point still stands.

To be fair, like the comparisons show, the creatures in Palworld (I don't know what they're actually called) look a LOT like Pokémon. It's possible that some 3-5 y/o children will see Palworld and think they're Pokémon and that it's OK for Pokémon to have guns (which it clearly isn't). This would ultimately drive parents (that don't know much about video games at least) away from Pokémon and other similar-looking games, mean TPC loses out on lots of money.

I see people joke about this but they don't know the full implications that this will have if Nintendo/TPC wins the lawsuit, if they win it will basically be the same outcome Bandai Namco did after filing a patent for loading minigames, no one else will be able to replicate the monster capture genre for decades, with no competition pokemon will eventually get too comfortable being on top and start delivering more stale, mediocre games like scarlet and violet and it will encourage bigger gaming companies to lawsuit smaller indie companies/games... :/

Ngl, can't say I'm surprised. There was only so much they could get away with, without being under Nintendo Watch.

I think it maybe is a similar situation to the 2018 Nintendo vs ColoPl lawsuit.

I always saw Palworld at the very least as parody of Pokemon, saying Palworld is not okay is like saying South Park's Chinpokomon is not okay. All similar designs from Palworld to Pokemon always came across as a homage rather than a rip-off, it's now just a scary thought creating anything with a worrying feeling that maybe that basic ass animal you included, a round sheep, a green monkey, a fire fox, would be considered "stealing from Nintendo" even though Pokemon originally just riped-off designs from Dragon Quest.

I have to wonder why it took Nintendo so long to make a lawsuit against Palworld. Like I remember when Palworld was first releasing the only thing Nintendo did legal wise was sue an Ash Ketchum mod. One that was locked behind a paywall too. And that was basically it. Hell iirc, one Pal had eyes similar to Eevee and Nintendo just asked em to change the eyes.

And here I thought they were gonna leave PALWORLD alone but nevermind 😬...

Honestly, I had a feeling this was gonna happen. I just wasn’t expecting it after so long I’m not doing anything. But then again, I’m familiar with North American laws not Japan laws when it comes to the apparent patent infringement.

I’m sure Nintendo probably talked to their own lawyers and after looking over everything they said they have a case. I’m not sure on the particular details mind you because I’m not from Japan. But there are some design elements some of the Pale world monsters that do bear striking similarities. So I don’t know if the Patent is in relation to the designs being extremely similar.

Or if you look at the example with that one Palmon that has Primarina’s (popplio’s final evo) hair style being almost an exact one for one. So that could be a patent infringement as that could be viewed as grounds of them, taking the model from sun moon, ultra sun, ultra moon. And using the model as the basis to create the pale monster. So, even though the rest of the pale monster is different. That one design element they share is enough.

Now your probably thinking hairstyle, even if that was the case they can’t patent a hairstyle. Maybe when it comes to human model characters in games. The rule doesn’t apply. But when it comes to fictional creatures like Pokémon and palworld maybe it’s a different story.

Again though, I’m not from Japan, so I’m just taking a guess what the patent infringement might be. Palworld is a cool game and I’ve played it. So don’t get me wrong. It is fun and then once you do everything it’s like there’s no point anymore. Move on to another game.

Look at the end of the day, if we try and view this objectively. Considering Nintendo and by extension the Pokémon company did take time to investigate first. They must’ve found something that gave them enough grounds to initiate a patent infringement lawsuit. Whatever that was, we’ll find out in due time.

I thought it could happen but I thought it would happen when palworld released. Not now.
