Why Do Your Feet Hurt While Running?

Ignoring that pain in your feet during or after you run can come with some significant consequences. When our feet are in pain, it's hard to work around that pain as runners, but I know that just not running and waiting out the pain is not a good enough option for us. So here are some things you can do right now to avoid a potentially serious injury and give your feet the relief they need.

I lost a solid month and a half of running this summer due to Plantar Fasciitis. Super Feet inserts in addition to a better stretching routine, foot strengthening, and a night splint were all parts of the solution.

I have learned so many additional tips from your channel over the last year that have helped out so much on marathon runs. Thank you so much!!

Great video! Thanks for the information. From July 2020 though May 2021, I missed 17 weeks of running from plantar fasciitis. I had two separate instances, one in each foot. With the most recent injury, even after 4 weeks of basically nothing, it was painful enough that I saw a podiatrist and was x-rayed, thinking I had a stress fracture. Thankfully, I've been back to running for 21 weeks and I feel great.

Foot exercises and barefoot walking (true barefoot as well as with Xero HFS shoes) have helped a lot by making my feet stronger. But I think the biggest benefit came from paying more careful attention to how my feet were feeling for the rest of the day after a run. If they felt great by that afternoon, I gave myself permission to add several minutes to the same run the following week. But if they still felt beat up, I kept the duration and intensity the same, and reevaluated the following week. I'm at 11 miles for my long run, and still increasing with no issues. For anyone discouraged from foot pain, there is hope!

Thanks for this. I'll have to check out the app. My arches have been tight lately. I injured (non-running related) my ankle this summer and crud went down hill from there and now my arches hurt and stuff.

Great video. a good reminder to look after the part of the body that gets a lot of the load. Currently I do use inserts that are custom to my feet. So much nicer for running when your feet do not hurt.

I’m (hopefully) in the last days of Achilles tendinitis. Stretching and self massaging everyday. Sadly for me, taking time off was the only remaining solution as I would run, re-aggravate the problem and get depressed about it. It’s been 2 months and I cant wait to get back to it. Last thing you want to do is pop your Achilles’ tendon.

My feet never hurt in my minimalist or barefoot shoes even on very long runs. As soon as I put on my cushioned shoes it feels like the bottoms of my feet are on fire. Bye bye cushioned shoes.

Try building up to where you are running a few times a week
In minimalist shoes and let your feet, ankle and toes strengthen. Do not rely on cushioning or inserts, they are a band aide and something you will always depend on.

My feet doesnt hurt that much, but sometimes they cramp up a bit.

My problem is shinsplints on my left leg and IT band on my right leg. So if it's not one leg that hurts, it's damn sure to be the other one.

But in Sweden we have a saying that pain is just weakness leaving the body 🤣

Besides proper footwear and customized insoles, one thing I found as a huge helper was changing your lacing technique! Whether high archs or wider feet, changing how you lace up and your shoes absorb that shock will make a huge difference. I personally am between regular and wide shoes, right on the fence. By changing my lacing pattern, my feet get just enough extra room!
