A NASA's Mars Curiosity rover team member gives an update on developments and status of the planetary exploration mission. The Mars Science Laboratory spacecraft delivered Curiosity to its target area on Mars at 1:31:45 a.m. EDT on Aug. 6, which includes the 13.8 minutes needed for confirmation of the touchdown to be radioed to Earth at the speed of light. The rover will conduct a nearly two-year prime mission to investigate whether the Gale Crater region of Mars ever offered conditions favorable for microbial life.

the human being is just amazing. it boggles the mind that we can drive a cart on mars from a desk at such a distance. respect to all the amazing minds who put this together.

I actually find it just as amazing that we humans can now control vehicles and do work under a mile of water as the BP Oil Spill Disaster showed us.What those guys did with those ROV'S was a pleasure to watch. What was really cool about watching the ROV operators frustration levels ebb and flow when they would get tangled up in their own embilical cords. I almost wanted to cry for them.

congratulation!. When in our time conditions as in economics as in the world in general are not very well, Nasa continue developing programs of in science and cosmos. When watching these shots from mars feeling very fine as me it give understanding that yet is places in our live for intellect and common sence!

0:46 Several weeks Curiosity spent there eh. I am not surprised because that rock bed & I suggest everyone to download the high res images seem to have dozens of "rock" anomalies. Download high res images only from NASA and use your zoom function ;)

Is it at all possible you can wait until Dec 3 for the official announcement?

there is a lag between the controls as well as sending pictures, think its only a few minutes, but that why you have to be careful driving one of these things, thing cod with bad lag !

Finally, I know A LOT of folks are relieved that Curiosity was able to take a photo of itself.
Never mind that it would have been vastly cheaper and faster to take of pic of Curiosity prior to launch, but, ok, they took one once it got to mars.
Such a valuable craft with so much important science to do and they waste their time and precious energy taking pictures of themselves...
Can anyone say "narcissist"?

What is the time in between when operator gives an command and rover executes it? (like latency)

Has anyone from Nasa or anyone else got any ideas about this item?
