A NASA Mars Curiosity rover team member gives an update on developments and status of the planetary exploration mission. The Mars Science Laboratory spacecraft delivered Curiosity to its target area on Mars at 1:31:45 a.m. EDT on Aug. 6, 2012 which includes the 13.8 minutes needed for confirmation of the touchdown to be radioed to Earth at the speed of light. The rover will conduct a nearly two-year prime mission to investigate whether the Gale Crater region of Mars ever offered conditions favorable for microbial life.

Curiosity carries 10 science instruments with a total mass 15 times as large as the science payloads on NASA's Mars rovers Spirit and Opportunity. Some of the tools, such as a laser-firing instrument for checking rocks' elemental composition from a distance, are the first of their kind on Mars. Curiosity will use a drill and scoop, which are located at the end of its robotic arm, to gather soil and powdered samples of rock interiors, then sieve and parcel out these samples into the rover's analytical laboratory instruments.

Why we can't see the actual videos streamed from Mars, a live of the atmosphere and landing such as takeoff from earth for example ???

Do you know how much that would cost? 1. Curiosity has already been built, so no physical upgrades anymore. 2. Curiosity has only 256 MB of flash data on it (the iPhone with the least amount of storage is 8 GB, and 1024MB are in 1GB), 3. Twitter already gives us photos, which is amazing because it takes 7-20 minutes for radio waves to transmit back to Earth.
The info is not useless, we want to see if we could live on Mars. We already know that the conditions are too extreme to live there.

It's not about "trying to inhabit the planet Mars" but about trying to find new pieces of information to increase our knowledge pool.

For now people are tying to collect as much "new" information as possible for scientists to experiment, it's like playing with Lego - imagine what kind of new things you could come up with if you found a new type of Lego brick, the possibilities multiply with already existing Lego bricks at your disposal.

In short. It's insanely important to find ANYTHING new

it does have cameras that display all colors, the cameras that are black and white are like that because they do not need color they are the cameras that sit underneath curiosity and are used for other purposes

I think there used to be a 24 hour NASA channel on cable where I live, but I live like a mile from NASA Langley so that might have had something to do with it.

If I live long enough to see Mars get turned into a space colony, I would be very happy! :D
