If you read the book you'll know that Lady Whistledown never talks bad about the Bridgertons. She is a gossip, but a kind one.

To everyone hating on Eloise- if you find out such a huge secret about your best friend, how would you react? Not to mention all the things Pen wrote about her family. She also wrote about Eloise and Theo. And the stuff (true but still) about Anthony. Yes, Eloise was kind of a bad friend for not paying much attention to Pen but Pen did betray her.

If you haven't read the books, there's another reason Penelope is Lady Whistledown. The money. I know people are saying Eloise is right to be hurt, and yes, she is, but Eloise has never had money troubles, never had her dowry gambled away, and both of her parents love her. Canonically Penelope wanted to use her Whistledown money to save her family.

"incipient wallflower indeed", one of the best writer's choices ever!

I would be incredibly angry, if my best friend consistently talked about my family members sometimes in a bad light, then exposed a relationship I had with someone I liked or was in love with. Eloise LET HER INTO HER FAMILY’s HOME. THEY WERE CHILDHOOD FRIENDS. I could not imagine a bigger betrayal. This wasn’t Penelope talking behind their backs to a couple of people. THIS WAS A WHOLE COMMUNITY. INCLUDING THE BRIDGERTONS THEMSELVES. It’s just a slap to the face, really.

People seem to team up over this very passionately. I think both of them made their fair share of mistakes and I don’t think either of them is wrong for feeling hurt by the other. Eloise underestimated Penelope like everyone else and didn’t actually take her seriously while Penelope sometimes hid behind Lady Whistledown and should have come clean to her friend way earlier. But I get why both of them acted as they did and I hope they manage to resolve this in the next season.

A lot of folks have said pen should have told Eloise but I think Pen knew/knows that Eloise wasnt mature enough to handle that secret. Its just weird to me she thought LWD was brilliant until it was Pen.

Friendship over for me. Your best friend gossiping about you and your family to the world and making a profit out of it! That’s betrayal!

People tend to forget that although Penelope’s business as Lady Whistledown can be quite scandalous, it has sometimes saved certain people too many times.

1. Because of her interference, Daphne didn’t have to marry Nigel, that creep.
2. Colin was saved from shame from Marina and the pregnancy.
3. Eloise was even saved twice from the Queen. One from her debut since she didn’t want to do it and two was from the Queen thinking she was Lady Whistledown, even though that last part is kinda on Pen. But still she saved Eloise from Queen Charlotte.

Yes, Pen sometimes ruins lives but the people she goes for kinda deserve it. Like Lord Berbrooke and Marina.

I don't really blame Pen or El about their actions. They both have their reasons. In this scene Eloise's words towards Pen is really heartbreaking and the worst moment of the show for me. But I can understand why she is like this. I mean all of these time she admired Lady W. and she was obsessed with finding her identity. That's because she put herself many dangerous situations and even came across the queen. Pen knew all of this but she didn't say anything to Eloise instead she destroyed her and her family's reputation and put Theo in danger too even if it was to save her. She was soo close with Eloise if Pen had revealed her identity to El, she definitely wouldn't tell anyone. In the books Pen didn't do anything against the Bridgerton's instead she flattered them in her writings. But of course Pen isn't completely wrong either she was under so much pressure and was afraid for El and she thought it was the only way to save her from the queen even if it wasn't.

Why are people so annoyed at Eloise when... this is so right? 😂

TLDR: I am a Penelope apologist

Here's the thing... of all the things Penelope wrote, there's barely anything that really spoke badly of the Bridgertons. Calling Anthony a rake was canon and a common title for gentlemanly manwhores back in the day...even Simon and Anthony called each other that at one point.

Now with Marina, she was part of the Featheringtons so news of her being compromised could ruin THEM, not the Bridgertons. Besides, Penelope has almost always praised Marina in LW, even when she was pursued by Colin. She tried to help Marina where she can, and tried to convince her out of tricking Colin.

She tried to warn Colin too but was dismissed, so she did what she thought was best for her friend and love to keep him from going into a loveless marriage with someone carrying someone else's child. I don't care if y'all would say she could've done something else...she chose what she thought was the best course of action in a stressful situation, her family be damned. It's flawed but y'all can't say you can make perfect decisions at what, 17-18.

Now with Eloise. She warned Eloise to stop the investigation, to cease what she's doing because her family's already threatened by the Queen. Eloise was stubborn and kept going and would've "outed" herself in the process causing her family to fall into ruin. Penelope had to chose something that is scandalous enough to make the Queen believe it was not Eloise to save their fam, anything less would've ruined them anyways.

And sure you could say she could've revealed herself but SHE knows the danger too, which is why SHE took precautions, she made sure none would discover her.

Sure you can say that she could've not started LW in the first place...and maybe you're right. But you don't know the sheer feeling of freedom you get, seeing something you did slap the faces of those that ridiculed you constantly while being praised for it. Penelope was essentially nothing. Her family was deemed eccentric, unusual fashions, and they're not rich enough to be considered a catch. She was stuck in a home with a family that doesn't think ber worthy of anything, in a community that constantly ridicules her, her looks, her preferences. When one is stuck in that situation, and form of freedom is enticing, and if that requires writing in complete anonymity with no one ever knowing its you, then you take what you get.

That is something Eloise cannot quite relate to. She is a Bridgerton, she has a family that support her, even if they sometimes want her to be more feminine, she has a support system in Benedict who lets her talk the way she wants. Being a Bridgerton, she is influencial by association, she can be as awkward as she wants, she will still get suitors, she will be invited to dances, and no one would actively insult her since her family has the power to retaliate. Penelope has none of that.

So yes, I shall defend Penelope...and while I love Eloise, I do not think her right in this situation, especially when she weaponized the very insult that the ton used in Penelope that made her turn to writing in the first place.

I think it says a lot about how you are raised because if you were raised privilege you probably would understand Eloise . If you grew up middle class or below you probably understand Penelope. It says a lot about our society and how even today we judge each other without seeing both sides.

A very malicious detail is that in the first chapter. When Penelope calls herself a "wallflower" Eloise doesn't correct her (she tries to deny it but in the end she doesn't). So her words are true. she considers Penelope a wallflower

Did everyone just forget that if Pen didn’t write about Eloise’s possible downfall, the Queen would’ve been involved??? It has been said several times, the gossips and rumors will fade over time, just like every Whistledown rumor has done. But if the Queen were to personally and publicly drag down the Bridgerton name, (it was even mentioned that she will hurt them) it would be permanent. What Pen did was temporary, oppose to what Eloise (and all of them) would’ve faced from the Crown.

Why is she saying all this to her with such a snide look? Girl was admiring and adoring lady whistledown until she found out who it was..

This scene made me dislike Eloise. You don't punch down. Pen has less of everything from money to advantages to choices and Eloise puts down the one extraordinary thing Pen does have. Which, by the by, Eloise, saved your bacon with the Queen. I don't know what will have to happen for me to like her again.

i like how people siding with Eloise are forgetting that the Queen threatened her to ruin her and her family in 3 days for being Wishtledown and no way was she believing Eloise when she said she was not the gossip writer.
Eloise was about to fake herself as Whistledown and praise the queen which would have pushed more in the mud and also Penelope begged her not to get involved with Theo like anything.

You know what? I get it, Eloise has a right to be mad, but what she says here is wrong. Just say that you're hurt that she wrote about you and your family, but telling her you're pittying her and that she's too scared to stand up for herself? Penelope's answer was correct in my opinion. At least she did something. She's a seventeen year old girl living in an era a woman only has the right to smile and look pleasing and find a husband and she took that and became an entrepreneur, a writer, a reporter, someone who Eloise would be proud of if she wasn't so jealous. Because really that's the reason behind her words.
