It is true that many Indonesian children do not acquire Bahasa Indonesia as their first language, particularly those who live in rural areas. Many of them acquire their local language first. They start to learn proper bahasa Indonesia once they get to primary schools. So, it is true that indonesia is a linguistically diverse country.

Communicating with Malaysians from the Peninsula is more difficult to understand than with Malaysians from Sabah...that's my experience as an Indonesian

In Indonesia, when there are films and cartoons from Malaysia that are shown in Indonesia, we as Indonesians still need Indonesian subtitles, this happens because Malaysian Malay pronunciation has a fast accent and the sound was not very clear even though they have the same similar vocabulary with us.
If Indonesians want to try to understand Malaysian Malay conversations without subtitles then we have to switch our brain to 80s mode because their language is like 80s Indonesian movie which is no longer used in modern Bahasa Indonesia.
It's like if you, as a native English user meet an Asian person who tries to speak English imperfectly, then you need a few seconds to understand what they say and sometimes you try hard to understand but actually you misunderstand what they say.

Most Indonesians use subtitles when watching films from Malaysia... but most Malaysians don't use subtitles when watching Indonesian films.

as Indonesian from Java ... I know both languages basically come from the same root, but honestly ... due to many 'small' differences between one to another language, I prefer to speak English with the Malaysians to avoid mis-communication or mis-understanding

Malaysian is not spoken by 33 million people. That is the population of Malaysia. Meanwhile, ethnic Indians and Chinese mostly speak their own languages. The results of the research were that only 45% of ethnic Chinese could speak Malaysian.

I believe, before we can talk about the similarity between both languages, we have to understand the historical roots of both. And before we can talk about their historical roots, we need to understand the definition of Malay/Melayu by Malaysian and Indonesian. In Indonesia, Melayu is a small part of diverge ethnicities, while in Malaysia, Malay is all bumiputera as whole. That's why Indonesian do not think Indonesian language was exclusively from Melayu language, while Malaysian think Indonesian has the same root with Malay language. If Indonesian and Malaysian cannot understand to each other, it's very understandable because Indonesian language was not have the only root from Melayu language, but also heavily influenced by Dutch, Chinese, and Arab. And also, the the Javanese, Sundanese, Maduranese, Balinese, Dayak ethnicities, Nusa Tenggara ethnicities, Sulawesi ethnicities, Ambonese, Papua, and other Maluku ethnicities are not considering themselves as "Melayu" (Unlike how Malaysian think they are). And historically + archeologically, some of them are truly not have the same root with Melayu ethnicity. As example, some ethnics were really direct Chinese descendants or Arab descendants, or the older people migrated before the came of that "Malay" to the archipelago. This is the one thing need to be cleared between Malaysian and Indonesian at the first hand.

As a Malaysian, I can understand bahasa Indonesia in the formal form but when chatting with an Indonesian in the streets, it wll take an effort for me to understand fully what was said, unless the Indonesian speaker make an effort to speak in full formal sentences.

Firstly thanks for the video. It explained lot of things to people i believe. As i born and raised from Palembang, South Sumatera even though now living in Jakarta, yes I agree mostly to what both perspective from Malay and Indonesia. As the Palembang people speaks their own language as daily conversation named Palembang language, this language also contains both Malay and Javanese words. And i have couple friends from Malay and we do understand each others like 70-80% of the time. And if someone from the east side of Indonesia, perhaps they will understand Malay a lot harder than their fellow Indonesian from west because of the local language/dialect roots.

For people who born and grew in Jakarta or near this region (JABODETABEK), they mostly use Bahas Indonesia in informal ways and maybe those quarter of Indonesian who speak Bahasa Indonesia are from this region.

Indonesian here, Bahasa Indonesia is like American English, while Bahasa Malaysia is like British english, Indonesian tend to speak as how it's written, while Malaysian usually pronounce the end of the words differently from how the words are written, that's why Malaysian speakers can understand Formal Indonesian better than the other way arround, but it's also depend from where the Indonesian come from, people from sumatra and kalimantan can understand BM better than people from eastern Indonesian.
