That's why, in Iran/Iraq war, Iranians used F14 and had scored by far more over air/sea/land than their American counterparts. Iranians had dominated the sky over the battle zone fearlessly.

The Navy still used A6 as a electronic warfare plane which flew with F18 on missions to jam enemy radars and protect attacking fighters. The A6 carried four EW officers ( warrant officers) .The Navy only in the last few years stopped using A6 EW platform ( 2018 I think). When Serbia shot down Stealth bomber it had no EW escort. The Navy now uses FA18 Prowlers for electronic warfare though it is argued the FA18 prowler platform system less capable in it electronic warfare capabilities.

The tomcat is one of the most beautiful war birds ever built and I believe could still fight with the best of today's fighter's, the F-14 is still dearly missed.

Don't let her size and weight fool you. While smaller fighters like the Viper are more nimble and thus maneuverable and the F-15 has more excess power to dominate the vertical domain, the Big Cat could still rate with the best of them if her pilot knew how to put her strengths on the table.

And this isn't bad for a plane that was designed during the early Vietnam war era. But time surely took its toll on her.

Baddest boy on the block in the 70s and 80s. Was an Air Intercept Controller on the Constellation CV-64 in early 80s... VF-211 Checkmates were my guys. Loved the A variant...until the D's showed up! 💪🏾

The PW TF 30 we're prone to compressor stall and F14A+were equipment with GE F110's. This also increased the thrust about 30% at roughly the same fuel flow. Then dozens of older F14 were upgraded to use the GE engine and given higher sequence letters.

If you have never seen an f-18 fly next to an f-14 the Tomcat is a lot bigger. I remember seeing one of the last flights at the Virginia Beach oceanfront late one afternoon it wasn’t planned it was just a pilot showing us what it could do and it was awesome. Shooting flares low off the water then a high speed run to straight up with full after burners until it hit the ceiling. If I remember correctly this was around this time of year in 2000

My brother served on the Super Sara CV60 back in the early 80s. He was a Tron Chaser and serviced the Tom Cat. He told me the aircraft was the ultimate shit! Used on the raid on Libya, Reagan ordered it into action and there was nothing the Libyans could do about it! Except run or die!
