What is a supernova?

Показать описание
A bite size explanation of what causes stars to die in supernova explosions.
Transcript:
Supernova are one of the most powerful explosions in the universe, but what causes these giant stars to die so violently?
Stars are giant balls of plasma, which is a gaseous mix of ions and electrons. In the centre of stars, atoms fuse together to create new elements by a process called nuclear fusion. Nuclear fusion generates a lot of heat, creating an outward pressure. This pressure is balanced by the attractive force of gravity, which holds the star together. But over time nuclear fusion stops and the star begins to die, enabling gravity to take over and cause the star to fall in on itself. As the outer star collapses, it bounces off the denser core, sending material shooting off into space at 10% the speed of light. It sends shockwaves throughout the interstellar medium. But what's even more incredible is what's left behind after these cataclysmic explosions.
