As much as we love to blow stuff up here on Earth, no bombs or pyrotechnics could compare to the incredible force of nature's biggest explosion, the supernova. As a star reaches its grand finale and explodes, what would happen to life on Earth if we were close by? How far away from a supernova are we considered safe? When I was in college we were taught that a super nova happens on avg once every 100 years in a galaxy. So the more galaxies we look at the better the chances are of seeing one.
I also remember questioning how they judge distances. Light years isn't the problem. The problem is the triangle that we use to calculate. I was told that it was a certainty that they were right. Well earlier this year they admitted that they have to find another way of measuring the distances again. So the largest stars they had found, well they are a lot closer now than before. Which also means that they aren't as big as previously thought. The star Betelgeuse was thought to be in between 600 to 700 light years away and as big as from our sun out to in the middle of where Jupiter and Saturn are. Now they dont know how large or how far away it is. Now me being out of school now for almost 30yrs, I understand that things will change and where some was thought to be fact will become obsolete.
