Damn. If that's how he describes CalTrain, I'd hate to get his opinion on BART, lol.

It's almost like all that money being allocated to improve public areas is finding its way into just a few peoples' pockets...

I'm glad that someone else noticed that techbros are really, really good at NOT changing society for the better.

Caltrain finished electrification a few months ago. Ridership is up 37% and the old train has been sold to Peru to be used for the new commuter rail in Lima

BART was originally ment to connect SF to San Jose and circle the entire Bay Area, making it possible to travel between all Bay Area counties on a single state of the art system. What happened was Burlingame residents protested because they didn’t want construction to disrupt their “perfect little town” and they ended up ruining the entire project. Several attempts have been made to finally connect the peninsula to the rest of the BART track but every Burlingame ends up blocking it.

A good family friend was one of the lead designers of BART and he died cursing the city of Burlingame. BART lost lots of funding due to the lack of connectivity throughout the Bay Area and remains a subpar transportation system to this day.

Actually it’s the opposite. The success of silicon valley has moved the price of real estate beyond what average non tech working people can afford plus there are no more factory jobs for them as aerospace and other mfg has disappeared. There used to be neighborhoods where housing was cheep. They’ve all been gentrified and low income people have been pushed out. What you are seeing are the people who have been left behind. I guess you can add drugs to that brought on by hopelessness.

Okay but tech guys come over here, make 3 times as much as the regular person living here, owners want to move their tenants out to remodel their properties in order to rent/sell to one of you guys, the rent prices sky rocket and the standards to rent become unachievable to the regular person. You have to make 4x the already absurd rent, and have a crazy credit score. People have to move to the outskirts to be able to afford a place to live creating an INSANE amount of traffic because people can’t afford to live where they work. I mean I live in the bay my whole life. Buying a house seems impossible. I’ve been homeless sleeping in my car many times. I literally saw a mother yesterday that couldn’t afford to buy her child a bag of chips because she had no money due to the rent being so high. It’s crazy out here

Living and doing this commute I 1000% agree. The train system is wild and 880 is the worst. It's crazy

Couldn’t agree more. It’s almost like the tech companies don’t give a shit about the Bay Area.

As a tech worker in SV, I agree with him. What is happening to the taxes we pay? public transportation in CA sucks. In SV, the local roads look like third world countries with so many pothole every few feet. A 1500 SF old house in Palo Alto costs 3M+. What is happening to the property taxes? At least, they should fix the damn potholes.

California has been building high speed rail since 2006 and soent over $36 Billion so far. They have completed almost a whole mile of track outside of Fresno. They might even buy a working bell and whistle to put on the engine one day, when they get an engine. They'll need another $35 Billion for that of course.

Everything he said was 100% correct.

I’m a software engineer and worked in Silicon Valley for 3 years, taking the cal train. California is a microcosm of what what’s wrong with America. Billions of dollars in capital, but hardly any of it goes to public infrastructure.

Do your research before you speak? The CalTrain modernization project started in 2017 and now has a full electrified system. So many people love to speak on Bay Area things that know nothing about the area.

He didn’t say a single lie. Grew up in the Bay Area, still live here. It’s simultaneously the best and the worst place in the country

Human. Wealth is concentrated in the hands of a few. It's not good. Thank you for saying this!!!

This is so true and finally someone is talking about it. All the money is going to very few people. Meanwhile of us who live here suffer
