After a stressful day, have you ever become aware of just how tightly you were clenching your jaw, furrowing your brow, or squinting your eyes? Such facial expressions show the world what we are feeling inside. They are, after all, the result of our emotional states.
However, the results of this study show us that the reverse is also true. This is called the 'face feedback hypothesis', which means that one's facial expression directly affects their emotional experience. This is why we have to smile even if it is intentional when we are depressed.
