5/16 as a Decimal

In order to change 5/16 to decimal form we need to divide 5 by 16. We know that since 5 is smaller than 16 we are going to end up with a number less than 1.

We can divide 5/16 with a calculator or do it longhand. In this video I did the division longhand (but checked my answer with a calculator). When we divide 5 by 16, we get 0.3125.

So: 5/16 = 0.3125
0.3125 is less than 1 so that is a good way to check if our answer is reasonable. You could also multiply your answer by the denominator and you should get the numerator. In this case 0.3125 x 16 = 5.

Note that 5/16 and 0.3125 represent the same quantity, they are just written in different formats. 5/16 is a fraction and 0.3125 is in decimal form.
