Video of a conference talk about SafetyCulture’s journey moving their application workload onto a self-hosted Citus database cluster for their SaaS business. This talk was presented at Citus Con: An Event for Postgres 2023 by Paul De Audney. In this talk, you’ll learn about the SafetyCulture team’s exploration of whether Citus was the right tool for our problem, and why they couldn’t just use PostgreSQL native partitioning with foreign data wrappers and remote partitions? You’ll also learn about:

■ The POC: Does Citus actually work like it says it will work (for our workload)?
■ The Business Case: What problem are we solving and why is it important to the business? What is the impact on other teams?
■ The Team: Who are the people we need to make this work and tie it all together into a production service?
■ The Challenges: Infrastructure deployment & management; High availability tooling & systems to ensure reliable operation at scale; Development lifecycle / what does this look like in our dev, staging, and production environments.
■ Testing & Validation: The talk will also cover load testing, failover testing, replication modes, and upgrades.

Paul De Audney has been working with computers professionally since 1999, predominantly in the infrastructure and sysadmin space, with a few years as a manager in startups and scale up companies. Paul has been using PostgreSQL on and off since before there was an autovacuuming capability in Postgres.
