History in Pi Minutes is a series where I look at some popular topics in Disney or Theme Park History and cover them in a bite size format.

In the 1970s, back when the Magic Kingdom was still the only park, Walt Disney World Resort added a lot of extra activities to turn it into the Vacation Kingdom! Part of this was adding the first Disney water park! Before Blizzard Beach and Typhoon Lagoon, there was a small water park built in the back of the Fort Wilderness Campground. River Country!

The parks pools were filled with actual filtered river water from Bay Lake and the Seven Seas Lagoon, creating an authentic Swimming Hole type experience for guests. The use of natural freshwater did lead to some added dangers. Including a you boy who died due to a brain eating parasite amoeba. One of only a few deaths at Disney ever.

Years later the park was closed, and the reason is still a mystery. But more mysterious is that it was not demolished. It was abandoned. Left to rot and decay. Making it a popular target for urban explorers sneaking behind the scenes. It was eventually demolished to make way for the Reflections Lakeside Lodge DVC Resort and Hotel, but that project was cancelled too. Leading to it once again being abandoned.
