Btw, I've seen companies say, "We will never sell your data without your consent" and then, in the TOS, it says that consent is implied in your usage.

I just automatically assume all companies are selling my personal data.

Any company that asks for personal data that isn’t completely critical to the core functionalities of their service is 110% selling it.

I worked for a company that bought data. I was told to clean up emails that had the + to remove them before we could use it to send marketing emails to those users. So yeh, even if you put the + in there, companies are now savy enought to know to clean it up.

There was a post I saw once where somebody signed up for stuff with their name as Firstname Companyname, and if they ever got mail addressed to that name they knew who did it.

I called out a company for doing this. They then said they never sell data. I told them “then you had a data leak because I’m getting spam from an email I’ve only ever used once on your site”

Before gmail, I knew people that did this with handwritten forms, intentionally misspelling their name in a particular way and watching for those mistakes to show up on junk mail

What you may find surprising is that job application data gets sold too sometimes. I've got a few of those email addresses that I've only used on job applications and are now receiving spam emails, which I guess helps explain part of the reason why ghost jobs are becoming so common.

I know someone who used this to successfully win a court case against the breach of data privacy when they sold his data. This was back in 2009

I've used this for when I was working conventions. I would send out emails for specific departments with the +department addition to my username, then made a filter to tag and sort the incoming emails. And it worked GLORIOUSLY.

Man we really need to make new privacy laws that make it illegal to sell or collect a person's online data, it's gotten out of hand and has only made the internet worse with every passing year.

doing that for years now and it helped a lot. Actually contacted some of the companies that sold my data and they all attempted to deny it which was funny as hell as I had solid proof.
