When an object accumulates enough charge, it can discharge to another object or into the air. This is often felt as a spark or electric shock. For example, you might sometimes feel a small shock when closing a car door or touching another person. Static electricity is usually generated through the friction between different materials. During this friction, electrons move from one material to another. While metals easily conduct electricity, it is harder to conduct electricity with insulators such as plastic and rubber. Static electricity typically accumulates on insulating surfaces because the charges cannot move easily. When there is sufficient humidity in the air, the water molecules in the air can absorb the charges, reducing static electricity. It is used in many areas such as photocopiers and air filters.
