Not Once Did Jesus Say If You Keep 10 Commandments You WILL Enter Heaven
Not once did Jesus say that if you just keep the 10 commandments, or even that if you keep all of the 613 laws of the Torah, that you WILL enter into everlasting life, HE NEVER SAID THAT! There is a proof text though that the FOOLISH take out of context, to try to prove that Jesus did say this, and that if you just keep the Torah, the 10 Commandments, that you WILL enter Life.
First, I want to read the verse OUT OF CONTEXT, and then I want to read the verse in context to show you HOW FOOLISH it is to believe this. First, out of context: Matthew 19 verse 17, (Jesus did say this), “But if you want to enter into life, keep the commandments.” Remember what Jesus said right there, IF YOU WANT TO ENTER INTO LIFE KEEP THE COMMANDMENTS”
Now I want to read the story of the Rich Young Ruler in all of it’s context, this is found in Matthew Chapter 19, I’m starting in verse 16; “Now behold, one came and said to Him, “Good Teacher, what good thing shall I do that I may have eternal life?” So, He said to him, “Why do you call Me good? No one is good but One, that is, God. BUT IF YOU WANT TO ENTER INTO LIFE, KEEP THE COMMANDMENTS.” He said to Him, “Which ones?” Jesus said, “‘You shall not murder,’ ‘You shall not commit adultery,’ ‘You shall not steal,’ ‘You shall not bear false witness,’ ‘Honor your father and your mother,’ and, ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’” The young man said to Him, “All these things I have kept from my youth. WHAT DO I STILL LACK?” Jesus said to him, “If you want to be perfect, go, sell what you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in haven; and come, follow Me.” But when the young man heard THAT saying, he went away SORROWFUL, for he and great possessions.”
Not lets back up for just a minute, let’s say the Rich Young Ruler asked His question about entering into Everlasting Life, because that’s obviously what He wanted, He wanted to go into everlasting life, he wanted to be saved, he wanted to go to heaven. And let’s say that Jesus responded to him in the same way, and lets say Jesus said to Him, “You shall not murder, you shall not steal…” He gave Him the commandments, BUT let’s say, at the end, instead of his CONSCIENCE BEING PRICKED and asking “WHAT DO I LACK?” Let’s just say he stopped there and DIDN’T ask that last question. Let’s say he felt just so justified, that he had kept the commandments, and so he said to Jesus, “All of those commandments I have kept from my youth, praise the Lord, thank you Jesus!” And then let’s say he walked away and went over to his buddies and he said; “Guess what guys? I just talked to the Messiah, and I asked Him what I had to do to enter into everlasting life, and Jesus said KEEP THE COMMANDMENTS!... I recorded it when Jesus said that I wrote it down, this is exactly what He said, “BUT IF YOU WANT TO ENTER INTO LIFE, KEEP THE COMMANDMENTS!” And then he told me ALL of the commandments that I have already been keeping and PRAISE THE LORD, PRAISE GOD, I HAVE KEPT ALL OF THEM!” (clapping) And all of his buddies probably, maybe they would have clapped for him. Maybe his buddies would have even believed that he was entering into everlasting life. BUT NOT HIM! He didn’t stop there. If he would have stopped there ALL his friends could have used that proof text that Jesus Himself quoted in Matthew chapter 19 verse 17
BUT GUESS WHAT? He himself, the Rich Young Ruler, his heart was pricked. For some reason HE KNEW IT WASN’T TRUE! He new that even though he had kept the 10 commandments, who knows how many of those 613 laws applied to him, or that he felt applied to him… but lets say as much as possible, or hypothetically he kept ALL OF THEM. Something in his conscience was STILL pricking him, even though he kept all 613 and all TEN! Something was still pricking his conscience and THAT is why he says to Jesus, “WHAT DO I STILL LACK?” Why do I still have this feeling I am lacking something? And then it comes out of Jesus’s mouth, “If you want to be PERFECT, go and sell what you have…” He wasn’t perfect yet? How was he not perfect yet if he’s kept ALL of the TEN and all of the 613? “GO and sell what you have, give to the poor and you will have treasure in heaven, and COME FOLLOW ME!” THAT is what Jesus said! Jesus wasn’t just making one more little commandment. You know there are some folks that they just tack this one more commandment onto their 10, so they have the 613, they have the 10 commandments, and now they have this commandment, and they think; “I keep all 613, I keep the 10, and guess what, I’ve also sold my possessions to the poor, so now I KNOW I’M ENTERING INTO HEAVEN, I KNOW I’M GOING TO...
