EU election: Europeans react as several far-right parties emerge victorious

Europeans voted across 27 countries, electing 720 lawmakers on June 9 to the European Parliament, who will serve the EU for the next five years.

On Monday, residents across the continent reacted to the clear shift to right-wing politics in this election, with mixed opinions.

"All in all, Europe is leaning more towards conservatism, to be honest. I think it's a step in the right direction, considering how many conservative parties have won in Europe right now," Poland resident Jakub Bokanowski said.

"I find it disappointing that the Greens performed so poorly. They are the only party that actually does something sensible, but they are being boycotted and sabotaged over and over again by citizens because everyone wants to protect the environment but nobody at his expense," Germany resident Christiane Abb said.

The parliament has for the past five years been governed by a three-group majority of the centre-right European People's Party, centre-left Socialists and Democrats and liberals, or Renew Europe.
