For me doing pushdowns first has been the biggest help. Even just doing 1-2 sets has been a huge help

After I saw basement bodybuilding do the seated tricep push down with a long rope, I knew I had to try it. It’s been killer. Also nice to see you accepting elbow flare, few years ago I used to think, like many lifters, that locked inwards elbows were mandatory. Definitely less pain+more gains when letting elbows flare, and using cable extensions, push downs, and dumbbell skull crushers

2:31 that motion you are doing right now is how I built 80 to 90 percent of my tricep gains. One dumbell one arm at a time. I was gonna do skullcrushers but instead did this and my tricep longhead is one of the top 3 muscles I currently have on my physique

Hi Alex i always had elbow pain when doing skull crusher with an ez bar, recently i switched to a straight 10kg bar and i feel a lot better, but before doing any kind of extension or behind the head movement i warm up with 2/3 sets AMRAP of banded pushdown that i saw from one of your videos, and let me say it man, this was a game changer, so I thank you a lot for all your tips and i wish you the very best.

After wrestling with elbow pain for a long time, I started doing everything you said in the video, regular width grip with the ez bar, elbows out, extending behind the head and slow negatives. Life saber

Man you are quickly becoming one of my favourite fitness YouTubers. Your content reminds me a lot of Eugene Teo’s. You guys have far different personalities but your ability to make informative content in a simple to understand manner is very unique !

This guy is looking crazy. Every year that passes he gets better.. unbelievable. One of the few people that gets this results after years of pumping the iron that I still believe to be 100% natty.

One way round elbow pain is to do high rep triceps push downs with a rubber band. I'm a 50 years old man who used to have all the elbow problems people suffer with for years on end. 3 months of 3 sets of 50 to a 100 reps of banded triceps push downs at the end of every upper body day solved the problem. I did no other triceps exercise in this time. Now I can go as heavy as I want on head crushers and other heavy triceps exercise without any problems at all. I hit a life time bench PR the other week. I still keep banded triceps push down in my upper days so the problems doesn't come back. I hope you take this knowledge on board it's been a game changer for me. Thanks keep the good work up 💪

I’ve mentioned this in the comments of one of your other videos Alex, but something I found to really help me when it comes to skullcrusher pain is to switch to cable pushdowns and overhead extensions for a while. When I reincorporated skullcrushers into my program, the elbow pain was gone and I was able to hit a PR!

Never had issues with skulls, but I only do them with dumbells. Since a Year or so I do a Hybrid of Skulls and Dumbbell-Pullovers and it's the most Natural movement, plus free Lat gains. Sometimes super strict form is not the answer

This video is just so reminiscent of my training right now 😂.
Even I who can barely skull crush with 70lbs now. I started getting a bit of elbow pain, not alarming but “weird”. So I started incorporating band push down before my skull crushers and unilateral lying extensions. I thought I was gonna be weak af but to my surprise I can do them with 30lbs which extending 30lbs with just your elbows and not feeling pain is GREAT. So I knew I was doing something right.

Looking forward to watching for some extra tips. Skullcrushers are by far the lift that put on the most long head mass for me, but I still struggle to mitigate that elbow pain.

Edit—
Finished the video. Definitely some food for thought. Thanks, Alex!

Facts! Never believed the "keep elbows tucked" que. Always felt better to let them flare 💪

In my experience training every muscle from the shoulder to the wrist will prevent elbow pain and flair the elbow and training the triceps in all it range of motion with different exercises, and lastly balance between the front muscles and back muscles in your torso and arms ie flexers and extensors and stretching if anything doesn’t work. These things I do to any joint in my body if I started to feel pain

When it comes to warming up for skullcrushers, I have found that warming up by doing 50 reps of just the movement with no weight at all works really great.

I appreciate you teaching us the proper way of doing this exercises; I was leaving behind my triceps, but now I can start doing skullcrushers knowing well I'm not gonna injure myself in the long run.

I do them with a triceps bar (roman bar, hammer bar, whatever is called in English) to reduce elbow pain, I also use it for a sort of close grip bench / barrel bench press, and seems to be quite effective in minimizing elbow pain during skull crushers, and taking out of equation shoulder during presses, but probably im at that stage that is not hurting -yet-. Probably switching to extensions definitely soon. Great video as always!
