Ex-spy Matthew Dunn was a deep undercover operative in MI6. He joins to talk about spycraft and espionage along with other behavioral aspects like why don't intelligence agencies recruit more psychologists?

Matthew Dunn has written 14 books since leaving MI6. As an MI6 field officer, Matthew Dunn recruited and ran agents, coordinated and participated in special operations, and acted in deep-cover roles throughout the world. He operated in environments where, if captured, he would have been executed. Dunn was trained in all aspects of intelligence collection, deep- cover deployments, small arms, explosives, military unarmed combat, surveillance, and infiltration.

Medals are never awarded to modern MI6 officers, but Dunn was the recipient of a rare personal commendation from the secretary of state for work he did on one mission, which was deemed so significant that it directly influenced the success of a major international incident.

During his time in MI6, Matthew conducted approximately seventy missions. All of them were successful. He currently lives in England, where he is at work on his next novel.

It's fun when you have these spy type guests on. I love to see that squirm when you ask them something they aren't supposed to talk about. You can see them thinking about how to answer without revealing too much

I have a recruitment story:
Back in the late 80s I was attending a British boarding school, and was one of a small handful of girls in the CCF (Combined Cadet Force).
In my last year, we had our annual parade, when high ranking officers from various branches of the Ministry of Defence came to inspect us. As I was a very social, outgoing young lady, I was asked to act as a host during the following "garden party" and entertain the officers. Anyway. Long story short, because I was a dual citizen, spoke 6 languages, and happened to be a very gifted sharpshooter, I came on their radar. I was asked if I'd be interested to work in the Diplomatic corps. We all know what that meant.
I was by no means an Oxbridge candidate, but equally not stupid. Lol. I shortly afterwards received a letter inviting me to attend Sandhurst (Military training college) for an interview.
I declined. There was no way I, a not unattractive, booby, not very sporty young woman, was going to survive such a male oriented environment unscathed- I lacked the confidence to think there was any chance I'd get through it. There was already enough hostility in the CCF against us girls, it was a taste of what might yet happen.
Still, I do wonder sometimes how my life would have gone, had I chosen that path.

The cadence with which Mr.Dunn speaks...would love for one of the behavior experts to comment on it. Maybe Mark Bowden. Its possible its a cultural issue, common to his area of origin, class, education. I dont know. Its very noticeable to me. Wish I knew what it indicates. Great episode!

IS CIA/MI6 FOCUSED ON DOMESTIC "TERRORISTS"?
September 11 was an enormous catalyst for the counter terrorism "industry" to launch. Funding for that category of mission went from being one of many competing missions to a category on it's own, a primary focus that no legislator would dare deny. As the US opened the flood gates, other allied nations followed suit, especially after each nation coincidentally experienced a terror attack, in turn(not implying anything-yet) . Let's look at this from a funding perspective only - it was a sort of bumper crop, one that was significant and which could be continued with minimal effort come budget time for both military and the quasi military agencies. As we are now well into the 3rd decade of this, and as certain "successes" along with the overall fatigue on the budget authorities vis a vis the middle east=terrorist formula, it's not a surprise we start seeing and hearing "domestic terrorism" be the new headline. Not simply an infiltrated terrorist in a cell, but increasingly "home grown terrorist" and lately a complete focus on"white supremacist domestic terror". It's easy to understand that as funding pressure develops, personnel involved abroad is being reduced, the individuals in the roles must seek a living. Not every operative would or even could turn to writing books or some other civilian role of deploying their specialization. Most such individuals would seek to continue their seniority, accrued benefits and reputation they had built within the service of their govt, so they would seek an internal transfer. So while one might believe that "the CIA does not operate internally" their operatives certainly would need to if they wanted to eat.
So, it boils down to a simple math problem: In total, how many such operatives were involved in the counter terrorism mission abroad that now have internal roles? a second question might be, how many ex foreign mission operative are NOW focused on the threat of domestic counter terror under whatever agency or even ngo?
All of which might indicate the domestic terror topic might be one that is based on want and not need, at least not one of public need.

I greatly appreciate Mr Dunn's approach towards, and respectful means of discussing, the importance of diversity in the modern intelligence community. Its not about numbers, its about ensuring access, understanding and empathy towards the communities and groups that aren't just heterosexual, Caucasian people above the age of 40. The greater the variation of life experiences in the workforce, the better the possibilities of achieving outcomes.

Who needs the power of arrest when you kill with impunity?

I don't know. Look at Salisbury. A genuine MI6 officer Pablo Miller they won't even say his name never mind write it down. I kinda doubt this guy. Maybe involved in Northern Ireland for army intelligence but MI6...
