I have a slight modification to show in an upcoming video that is along that line. Thanks for commenting.

In the project article I recommend using it with oil stones only, but if using water stones it's best to coat the parts with polyurethane to seal them. This should keep it in fine shape.

Absolute brilliant!!! Easy as perfect! There allways videos about sharpening by hand... but my thoughts allways are, how they keep the angle quiet perfekt! Untill now, there was no way to do! I have to build this right now!!! Im absolut Thanks a lot!.... and by the way... i like your videos.... easy.... not to serious.... just what it is.... woodworking... just trying and doing!!!! Keep it!!!!

There is also the clamping bar (the metal bar that holds the chisel) that sticks down a bit, depending on the angle and thickness of the blade. The gauge is not difficult to make make, so not much would be gained.

john, love what you do, love your method of teaching...I just want to mention something that I learned in 'speech class' back in high school.  it's simply mentioning the word "ahhh"  once you start to realize that you say it you find yourself noticing it, and eventually you learn to not say it!  I am sure you will notice it now, I sure did when it was pointed out to me.  within weeks I noticed that I'd stopped doing it.  I only bring it up hoping that your videos will go from a 98% perfect to 99.53724% perfect.

I saw that jig - nice. This one has the rustic appeal, though (oh and cheap appeal).
Thanks for watching.

Thanks. The jig can handle plane irons up to 2-1/2" wide.

"Norton crystolon-India combination stone" - copied that right from the article on this, linked to in the description (who'd of figured?)
Glass and sandpaper are cheapest to sharpen one chisel, one time, but in the long run it would cost much more (sandpaper doesn't last long at all). Plus, you still need a jig with that method.

Nice jig. I have a worksharp and it does a good job for me. This jig would be good for plane irons also. You could fit some wide irons in it.
Thanks John

No problem, I'm justing getting a lot of that lately. It takes just as long to answer the question directly, as it does to say "look in the description", so that's normally what I do (or not answer at all). When you get 100 or more comments per day to read through, it can be a bit annoying when someone asks a question that was already answered.
Enough rant. I don't like using sandpaper to sharpen. I think it's a waste of money and material. Spent $30 and have a stone for the rest of your life.

Making marks on the sides (as I did in the video) after the angle is set does this.

It uses the whole stone (as shown in the video). Having it like this makes the wear on the stone more even, less likely to get dished.

This would work really nice with dmt type stones and some mineral/baby oil. I still have my late fathers chisels and planes, through 3 years of bad storage need de surface rusting etc for me to use again, just like I did when I was young. He had an amazing knack of keeping an angle on an oil stone whilst doing a figure 8. I'm not gonna use his old indian oil stone, I remember when he made the case for it and the stone is almost as flat as glass except for the corners 20 yrs on. I cherish it.

The best time for sand paper is for flattening the soles of planes or if you get a 1910 Stanley with the original iron that is missing a corner, sand paper 100 grit will remove faster than a nice stone and for removing a lot of metal it's cheaper than wearing out a stone no matter what grit. I keep the iron in the honing jig and go to stone when I have the iron square and minus the dings. I had to repair my 1/2" mortice chisel. It fell out of my bag onto concrete! 2 sheets of paper to repair it!

Hey John. Have you thought of maybe adding angle position stops to the bevelling part of the jig? Won't have to keep measuring your angles.
