Printing Photos at Home w/ Canon PRO 300

Today we’re discussing printing photos, is it worthwhile, what’s the cost and benefit and I’ll share some tips and a few of the things I’ve got wrong along the way.

The Canon iX6850, an A3+ printer is the best printer ever and such great value. You can get one for under £250. It prints smaller sizes too. If it is for personal use and not for printing to sell, then basic good quality inkjet photo paper is all you need to make great prints for the home and friends. Super value frames can be bought from places like Ikea (other stores are available). The printer also takes just 5 value cartridges, so it is not expensive to run. Printing adds a whole new enjoyment to the hobby of photography!

Excellent piece and sage advice. After years of considering that prints would be of little value, since most my photos are intended for just me, I recently discovered the value (and joy) of printing. I had always noticed that family and friends responded much more enthusiastically to prints, versus viewing on a screen. Getting a printer changed my perspective on just about everything. I look at each image more analytically to determine whether it is “worth” printing. Those that I think are “worthy” are looked at and edited much more critically. I couldn’t possibly afford to frame all of my best prints, nor do I have wall space, but I keep them in a binder. After they have enjoyed their corporeal existence for a while, I start to consider which are my best-of-the-best, to be destined for better papers, larger sizes, and framing. Truly a “game-changer” for me.

I just bought one of these printers and they are absolutely amazing. Taking my images to the printer and seeing them framed up really completes the journey for me.

You have convinced me (after a LOT of nagging from my friends, followers and even my Dad) that I should be printing my work (& dare I say it even considering selling some too!).
This vlog has done it for me, I am about to buy the very printer you have suggested (Canon PRO 300) & I WILL set up a studio & finally show off some of my work in a way that does it justice.
Vlogs like this provide exactly the inspiration & some of the answers to the technical & cost attributed questions that I had in my own mind.
Doubts are now eliminated, I am going for it.

Thanks for a good video as always. I got my Canon Pro-300 early this year and it's my first real photoprinter and I'm so glad I invested in it. You can get your images fast out on the market and best of all you can try out new papers before you go to your lokal print shop and print huge expensive photos.

After watching went out and brought the printer.
Just printed first ever photo, Usually they’re just left on iMac.
I’m so pleased and think this will improve my photography.

I've carried on from seeing the print in the developer then fix then stop bath in the darkroom. Its the most exciting bit of photography holding the actual image in your hands. Digital is the same and more immediate but the satisfaction is the same. I still get a buzz when i post process and print the final image out. Another excellent vid Adam and for me an important part of photography.

Thanks Adam for this great video on printing. I agree that a photograph doesn’t have to be printed to make it a photograph, but printing is important. I lack wall space, so each year, I’ve taken to selecting my top photographs of the year - some years less than 10; other years I’ve had 12 - and printing them to put in an album. Every few years I might also print them in a book. It does mean they’re not always on display, but I can look at them whenever I want and show to others. I think this is certainly better than them living in the dark recesses of hard drives or on the cloud and only seeing the light of day through social media. I’m going to rewatch some of your other videos on printing. I also lack the space to house a printer. If I ever manage to sell a few prints, then maybe I can one day justify the investment and somehow make space. But my work towards selling prints is a work in progress. I am thinking of exhibiting in a local pub, which exhibits the work of local artists, but has yet to exhibit the work of a photographer. I would have to invest in getting the prints made, mounted and framed. I don’t expect it to be a money-making venture and do expect to lose money, but I think it would be good to get my work in front of a few people.

Fantastic video! I am inspired. For me, printing images is a somewhat familiar but neglected frontier. I’ve always liked printing images, but have not done so for many years because of the cost. The cost no longer bothers me as much as it once did, mostly because Epson Eco Tank has brought down the per page cost for necessary text and general purpose Ink Jet printing. I recently printed some photos, framed, and gave them for gifts. It was very satisfying. It felt like a continuation of the photography process. I am eventually going to get a dedicated photo printer and set sail again on that journey. The cost will be substantially higher than the Epson Eco Tank printing, but a dedicated photo printer is well worth the money because of the value of what is being printed.
