This week, Gruhn Guitars repair shop manager Greg Voros walks us through the steps for a proper setup on a 1966 Gibson SG Custom. Even though he demonstrates the setup on an electric guitar, the principles of a proper setup are similar for an acoustic guitar or mandolin.

Greg is an excellent guitar tech. He took my nearly unplayable since new 1980 Gibson ES335TD and made it a great playing guitar. When you hear people say that a guitar plays like butter, well that is what he has done on every guitar I have left with him (6 so far including a 41 year old 12 string Yairi). In fact all of the techs I have met at Gruhn Guitars are excellent.

Really cool! I look forward to seeing more videos like this one, like on
a 335.

Thank you for explaining why you would lower the pickups. Makes sense.

I had a question about the nut filing. There should be a "ramp" back on the nut slot so it intonates at the front edge, not in the middle. I was taught that checking that is part of the intonation process. Also on the nut in this video looks like it's filed way to deep, possibly due to wear over time and that should be address in the action and intonation steps. I don't claim to have Greg's experience or abilities but it seems these are important steps to at least check in the set up process.

I have a question regarding humidity. If I would play outside on stage "after corona times" and the sun is pounding. Let's say I humidified my instrument at home. wouldn't that be too big of a change for the instrument from being humidified to getting sunbaked? What is the best thing to do in this situation? Not humidify a view days before or something else?

please explain the use of steel wool close to magnetic pick ups and why you should not promote this method having
seen may a coil fail due to this practice? no amount of care can stop fine micro particles of steel gravitating into fragile winds.
