John, you know of what you speak. When I was a kid in the 70's I loved radio. CB was a big fad then. By '83 I could talk to Australia on my way to work on channel 38 from Los Angeles CA. By '90 I earned my ham ticket and built a setup to talk around the world to other hams. But the decline had started by then. The computer hobby destroyed ham radio, despite us being told otherwise by the ARRL. Shortwave broadcasters followed right along and went off the air. Nobody listening. Unlike the 1950's no ham will hear a strange alien signal and call the government. We're QRT.

I live like 2 hrs from Greenbank observatory. My family and I go their every few years or so. We used to have a camp about 45 minutes from it. Greenbrier County is beautiful and full of caves too. But there aren’t any in the part of state I live in Logan West Virginia. We just have abandoned coal mines all in our mountains here. Greenbank is beautiful. One of the times we visited back in 1999 or 2000, and they was still building the big massive one. Instead of taking the tour bus, we decided to walk it. Takes forever to walk out to it but it’s just so massive. And there are gopher mounds spread out all around the perimeter of the last big satellite. Pretty awesome experience if anyone wud like to experience it. Definitely a cool tour and learning experience
