It was basically burned alive. It's scales seared off, and then the scaring formed as new skin. It's entire body mutating, bones growing from it's spine. The pain it felt was probably horrible. That's why he came out of the ocean. To destroy humanity for the pain they caused him.

I love how they blend the stock footage from the real test with their cgi

Man, I'm glad this film won the vfx Oscar, because I'm pretty sure that they recreated the nuclear explosion with CGI and not use stock footage. The video is too crisp and smooth.

remember when before he was hunched over like a velociraptor but after he stands upright? the nuke gave him arthritis and bad posture 😭

Godzilla already had his regeneration ability before the nuke, so it basically didn't allow it to die in this scene and forced him to remain alive and burn. The radiation probably blended with his DNA during his healing, causing a mutation.
