Hi, everyone! This is Lara Hammock from the Marble Jar channel and in today's video, I'll make the case for why you need a junk email address.

You have a personal email address, right? And probably one for work? You also need a junk email address. Why? Because every time you sign up for ANYTHING on the Internet these days, you have to provide an email address. And why do they want your email address? To send you email -- generally emails asking you to buy things. These emails are distracting, time-consuming, and potentially budget wrecking. There is NO REASON that they need to be showing up in your main inbox that you use to organize your life, read news, and catch up with friends and family.

So, create a junk email address. Mine is with Yahoo mail. It is free -- obviously. Every time I am asked for an email for something that is not essential, I give them this email address. So that applies to customer loyalty cards, online purchases, membership sites that I use infrequently, and really any organization that will send me extra emails that I will have to manage on a regular basis. I've gotten to the point that I am so secretive with my main email account that I will give out my junk address and only switch over to the real one once you've proven to me that you are not going to send me a bunch of spam.

So, how does this work practically? Well, first of all, I try to be very on top of my main email account and the other accounts that I use frequently (I have 5). I get to email zero or empty inbox at least once per day. With my junk email -- I never check it, never delete anything, I just let it spin out of control. And It totally doesn't matter because generally -- I don't need anything in there. Right now I have over 94,000 unread emails in my Yahoo account. I don't keep this email account on my phone or those unread numbers would drive me nuts. Instead, if I need to access it -- I either go through the Yahoo Mail app on my phone or the browser interface on my laptop.

So, why would I need to access my junk email? Well, I use it for online purchases. The vast majority of emails that I get from online vendors are trying to get me to buy more stuff, but occasionally, I'll actually order something and the tracking email will go to my junk account. No big deal, I go there, find the email and forward it to my main email address. Same thing for travel plans through Expedia or United. Another reason I access my junk mail is if I'm going shopping and I'm looking for a coupon. Instead of receiving an email for a sale and then deciding to go to the store on the basis of that coupon, instead, I wait until I actually have to go shopping for something and then go back through sales and coupon emails to see if any of them work for my purposes.

And that's it! Without my junk email account, there is NO WAY I would be able to get to inbox zero once per day. I would also waste time sifting through advertising emails to get to the emails that I need to respond to and probably be persuaded to spend more money on stuff I don't need. Let me know what you think. Comments are always appreciated and thanks for watching!

I agree with zeroing out an inbox without becoming a slave to it. My preferred method is creating rules in Outlook and a lot of unsubscribing. Enjoying your videos!

Any tips on cleaning up my existing Gmail address to keep as my primary, while I begin to transition to the incorporation of the junk email?
