Lake Superior 🚢 The Graveyard of the Great Lakes 🌊

🌊 Did you know that one of the world's largest ship graveyards lies in the middle of North America? 🗺️ Welcome to Lake Superior, the largest freshwater lake on Earth 🌍, spanning over 80,000 square kilometers. This immense body of water is shared by Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, and Ontario, Canada 🇺🇸🇨🇦. Its depth reaches up to 400 meters, and it holds an astonishing 12 quadrillion liters of water 💧 enough to cover both North and South America 🌎 with a 30-centimeter layer!

🚢 But it’s not just its size that makes Lake Superior so famous. Over 350 shipwrecks have been recorded here ⚓, with more than 200 lying between Grand Marais and Whitefish Point a place fittingly called the ""Graveyard of the Great Lakes"" ⚰️. The lake's treacherous conditions, especially in the fall 🍂, with winds up to 110 km/h 🌬️ and waves reaching 9 meters 🌊, have made it a death trap for countless ships and sailors throughout history.

The fact that it could cover north and south America is crazy

My late brother-in-law lived near Whitefish-Point, MI
which sits on the south end of lake superior. His black lab lost his way home and floated on a chunk of ice across Lake Superior into Canada. Doggy was found rummaging trash. My brother-in-law had to drive around Lake Superior to Canada to retrieve him. They figured his black lab braved high wind, massive waves & freezing temps on his journey across the ice. When doggy was reunited with my brother-in- law he jumped into his arms! What an amazing brave journey. Dogs are incredible! There was a pic of the reunion in USA today.

I grew up in Wisconsin. I knew a retired ship captain that did shipping on both the ocean and the Great Lakes. He always said that he'd rather be on the Pacific Ocean than on Lake Superior. It's actually more dangerous than the open ocean in the fall. I became very fascinated by the maritime history of the Great Lakes. Fun Fact: the state of Michigan (including the upper peninsula) has more lighthouses than both coasts combined.

When I was a kid swimming in lake superior (in Ontario), my grandmother would tell me "If you go past the bouys you'll get swept out and never been seen again!" Made the swimming experience stress free

I grew up and still live on Lake Michigan. You learn at an early age that the Lake is not like smaller inland lakes and is to be respected, especially during spring and fall when the Lake is either warming up or cooling down. Dozen’s of people die on Lake Michigan alone every year because they associate it with smaller inland lakes and don’t realize every one of the 5 Great Lakes are an individual sea.

I was on Lake Superior once and I’ve been on Lake Erie many of times, it definitely feels like the ocean.

I can ride my bike for 10 minutes and be at Lake Superior. There’s a nice park and sometimes I’ll go down to that park and sit on the swings and watch the sunset behind Canada. And then watch the blinking lights on the Canadian wind turbines and the freighters. The freighters are so much cooler to see at night because the way the lights reflect off the water make it look like there’s an underwater city. And when all the leaves fall off the trees I can look out my bedroom window and see Canada behind the trees. Sometimes I’ll even go across town to the docks at night so I can bring my bike on the dock without having to worry about dodging people, and I’ll sit and watch Canada and their traffic. Just looking at the water and listening to it can be so wonderful. Another favorite is all the canals off it we have, the canals run so quickly the water makes a soothing rushing sound, our city built the nice long sidewalks along the canal so whenever I ride my bike on it I’ll stop sit on my bike take off my headphones and just listen. The only thing that compares to that feeling is sitting in the woods listing to the leaves ruffle so loud like they’re trying to tell you something.

Michigander here, we refer to this lake as “she who never gives up her dead” because the water is so cold that dead bodies don’t float and because it’s so deep it’s rare they ever recover the body

I live here and I love it every day 😂. 1332 ft deep. Grew up in Detroit area and went to college here (Michigan tech) . The season in October and November turns superior into a frothing sea, 15ft swells I personally have been spashed by. I have seen up to 30ft spray of ice on to the highways near Marquette, but I live in Hancock.

In Siberia (Russia)
The water reserves in Baikal are gigantic - 23, 615.39 km³ (about 19% of the 123 thousand km³ of all world reserves of fresh lake water). In terms of volume of fresh water reserves, Baikal ranks first among lakes in the world.

UMD student here. Lake Superior is the pride and joy of Duluth!! When you look at the lake’s horizon during twilight hour, it looks like it blends into the sky seamlessly and stretches on forever.
