I grew up on the shores of Lake Superior... those waters are extremely cold year-round, I can't imagine how dangerous this mine was.

I stayed on Silver Islet with family friends about 38 years ago. I canoed over the same mineshaft pictured on the home page. Recognized it immediately. It's a sight you don't forget. At the time the island still had no electricity and Superior was the only water source. There was only one telephone (at the general store).

If you’ve never been to that Lake, it’s so not like Erie or Ontario. You can feel its depth right from the edge. It has this feel, like a presence that is to be respected.

It may have been flooded but it still has a silver lining.

I grew up 20 minutes from here in Thunder Bay, there is stories like this all over the coast of superior. I wish our city did a better job of showcasing this to the world because all the old houses and buildings are still intact and look amazing

My Dad is a Geologist, and I asked how they would ever know back in 1800 how there was a Silver mine under Lake Superior. He said they found the ore...large vein with Silver on land on the inlet and followed the vein which went under Lake Superior right off Silver Inlet (island) and mined it. But that is how they originally found there was Silver to be mined was on the inlet.
My Dad is up at our place in Minnesota right now on the porch looking out at Caribou Lake where our cabins are, just 10 miles from Lake Superior ❤❤❤... I grew up snorkeling all along the shore of Lake Superior from Lutsen and all over Grand Marais, Minnesota❤❤❤

They delved too greedily and too deep. You know what they awoke in Superior--shadow and water.

Lake Superior - not furious, just quietly, overwhelmingly superior.

The idea of being a mine is already scary enough let alone one that's underneath a lake constantly being filled with water 💀

The Old Mine at Silver Island - i have been to Silver Island and there are at least 2 large rectangular shaped holes about 5-8 feet across that are spaced out on the north side of the Island. The holes go downward into the water and at a slight angle. I could not see the bottom. So awesome to see this video show Silver Island! I was canoeing 🛶 along the shoreline of Lake Superior and we stopped on the Island to explore it. This was in the early 2000's - around 2007 or so. And i was with 2 of my cousins. ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤

This is very similar to Quincy mine in Hancock MI in the upper peninsula. They had to pull water out to mine down constantly but when the price of copper dropped they let the mine fill with water and it would cost too much to empty it and shore it up now that the copper prices are up again. Cool tour with a ride on a trolley that takes you to the upper levels of the mine

I was there once about 25 years ago. The water was bright blue there compared to the rest of the lake. Beautiful!
