As an ex signalman in the US Navy, we saw this all the time. That is a ship that is over the horizon and all that is visible above the horizon is the top part. In this case, it appears to be a tanker and we are seeing the smoke stack and just to the right is a mast. The narrow concave appearance where it meets the waterline is due to the atmosphere and the image is distorted. My estimation is that we are seeing the port beam, imagine a clock and 12 o'clock is the bow, we are seeing it from it's 8 o'clock location and it is traveling away at an angle.

When filming a ghost ship, Bigfoot, any lake monster, or any unnatural phenomenon, always make sure you take a photo or video that's very blurry, shaky, or grainy and makes the viewer guess what it is you're filming.

I'm a navy man. The water can and does play tricks on you. Small things can appear large, distant things close and vice versa.

It is called FATA MORGANA. Fata Morgana mirages significantly distort the object or objects on which they are based, often such that the object is completely unrecognizable. A Fata Morgana may be seen on land or at sea, in polar regions, or in deserts. It may involve almost any kind of distant object, including boats, islands, and the coastline.

I miss the good ol' days when the History channel had, like, history?

A friend who lived near the desert had a picture, kinda blurry, of a ranchhouse on the horizon, only on some days. One day he took a drive around, to the other side of the desert, at the base of some mountains, he found the ranchhouse. It was about 30 miles away from where he had seen it from the other side of the desert and concluded that the heat waves in the late afternoon on the desert had magnified the ranch house and made it look closer than it actually was.

Lake Superior is well known for a phenomenon called Fata Morgana. It causes things really far away to look way closer and look like they're floating. It could be something on the opposite shoreline or even something on the water but it's a real object.

I personally have pictures of this same situation near Duluth, MN. As the object got closer, the ship became visible. It is just an optical illusion that ends when the ship is close enough. The images I have appear to be 2 different ships that merge into 1 as it got closer.

It's probably a Fata Morgana, a kind of mirage. A mirage is an image caused by atmospheric refraction. Refraction refers to the bending of, in this case, light waves as they move through mediums of different density, typically layers of air with different temperatures. In particular, a Fata Morgana is a superior mirage.

It's a mirage. Particularly, Fata Morgana. Entire skylines 🏙 have been reflected back out into seemingly thin air above the waterline.

My brother and sister-in-law seen something very strange. On lake superior they said it was a huge ship that seemed endless. They flashed a light, it flashed a light, and all A sudden It was on them, and they couldn't see either end of how big it was. They said it was miles it seemed. They were truly plurplexed

It looks like a mirage type reflection of an object below the horizon.

This is a phenomenon known as Fata Morgana, also a 'Superior Mirage'.
A Superior Mirage occurs when there is a temperature inversion; the air below the line of sight is colder than the air above it. Passing through the temperature inversion, the light rays are bent down, and so the image appears above the true object, hence the name Superior.

I've seen this phenom myself, while gazing over Seattle's Elliot Bay. Passenger Ferries looked they were floating 100 feet in the air. So, Ghost Ship? Nah. Sorry.

Let's take a closer look, proceeds to just zoom in on the same video that was clearly taken on a calculator 😂

My forbearers, the Stanard Brothers, were Clipper Ship Captains on the Great Lakes. They discovered a massive submerged rock in Lake Superior 20 miles from any land. It was a navigational hazard and became Stanard Rock Lighthouse, the construction of which in the late 1880’s was a marvel.

I graduated from the Bigfoot photography academy. I used to zoom in and focus, But I learnted that blurry pics get more likes, and subscribers

It's called a fata morgana. It's a very unusual mirage effect that makes far away objects appear much closer than they really are.

We see these here on the shore sometimes. We actually watched a freighter that was just over the horizon go by, but it was the top view, as if it was travelling on its side. I did a little research. It appears the lake has cold water mirages that actually bend light, similar to heat in the desert or hot pavement distortions.

It had to have been a mirage: the distorted image refracting from a distant "Ghost Ship", caused by a thermal column of warm air over the much cooler water.
