The term 'history repeats itself' sure is an accurate one. This is exactly how WW2 started with the West appeasing Germany after they wanted the Sudetenland, Czechia, etc. In this case it starts with Ukraine, but would probably progress to Moldova (Transnistria) and the Baltic States. But what can you do with a country that is unstable and stocked with nukes?

Unfortunately, overall Russians have a slavery mentality. Feudalism was abolished most stayed with their owners, and the soviet union collapsed everyone wished to go back. The Russian opposition is the few that have a free mentality either moved out or in jail or always straggling. 1000+ years old nation and still willing to give up freedom for a false sense of stability. my point is that most people have displaced unlimited belief in the imperial authoritarian governance. In the entire Russian history, only one person was truly elected and that is Yeltsin. And even then he only stepped down for health reasons and installed Putin without democratic voting.
