What Veterans Need to Know About VA Disability Back Pay

If you're a Veteran who has been approved for VA disability benefits, you may be wondering when you'll start receiving your payments. The answer to this question depends on a few different factors, but one thing is for sure: you will eventually receive what's called VA Disability back pay.

VA Disability back pay is the lump sum of money that the VA owes you for the months (or years) between the date when your disability began and the date when your application for benefits was finally approved. For example, if you were injured in combat and became disabled as a result, but it took two years for your VA disability claim to be approved, you would be owed VA Disability back pay for those 24 months.

This was me. I did my intent to file i. 2020 and didn't actually submit my claim until a few months later. By the time my exams were scheduled, completed and a decision was made i woke up one day to a $40, 000k deposit without ever looking at my mail and that's when i learned i got a 13 months worth of 100% disability back pay. Best surprise ever

It is a pleasant shock to see $40, 000+ in your bank account the day after you get your permanent 100% rating especially when you have been living pay check to paycheck for many years. Although I don’t need CC’S help I enjoy reading about other Vets win their battles with the VA. 🇺🇸🇨🇦🇺🇸

I've received one back payment before. Got the money before the decision letter arrived. Pleasantly surprised. Good information Craig. Thanks.

I never filed my original Va claim. I woke to a check for a substantial amount from the government in my mailbox. (Yeah, it was a very long time ago) I didn’t cash the check for a long time, afraid it was some kind of scam. First I heard of my disability came from the VFW, then the official VA letter came a few weeks later, then I cashed the check. When I filed for an increase a couple years ago, I was broke, checking my bank account to see if I could afford a dollar hamburger, I found I had, once again, thousands of dollars. That’s how I found out they approved the increase. Of course in todays world, I went straight to the VA site and immediately checked my status. The letter came 2 months later. Thanks to combat Craig for the advice that got me from 50 to 90%. I’m not done yet.

My 9 year back pay got blown in 4 months….. sad I know but I don’t know what to buy anymore so that part feels good. They’re just dumping money on me at this point. Also fun fact….was exempt from child support so my entire debt was wiped clean…..Life is so good rn…I waited so long for this

Thank you for all you do and the wisdom you pass on to us brother! I just got word that my PTSD rating was bumped up from 30 to 70 making me 90 percent. My sleep apnea claim is deferred for some reason and they denied my TBI claim and my gastro claim. So off to the appeal process I go.

Since winning Individual Unemployability and social security and 70 thousand dollars in back pay my life has been completely restored way better that it was before the Army messed me up. I am also getting married to a very attractive woman and will get the pay for having a spouse once we are married. I got a lawyer involved to win my claim after being denied twice then approved and underpaid at 50 percent. I told the lawyer that was not enough, and I wanted every penny the VA had for what they dd to me on active duty. The judge used six laws to back me up. Every page of the judge's decision he was going off on the VA on why I should have what I have LOL. I almost cried reading that judges decision. Do not give up.

CC you're spot on Bro. Followed your tips and advice on my HLR Informal Conference. Went from DENIED TO SUPPLEMENTAL DENIED TO HLR TO 90%. Higher Level DRO/ Decision Review Officer said that he had latitude in adjusting retroactive back pay dates. A couple of days and 52K grand hit my account. Thanks again Bro!!!!

Craig, you're doing a great job keeping veterans informed to get their benefits they earned and deserve from their sacrifices in the military service. I'm now TDIU permanent and total, with SMC. It was a long, difficult battle with the VA since 2013 to get here in 2022. I'm very tired of dealing with the BS that goes hand in hand with fighting the VA for benefits. I wish you and your subscribers all the best. I'm outta here!

Hey CC you are always well equipped with information to give to us that are not so educated in the process. It is great that you instruct us to join the boot camp you have to better learn and utilize what is there.
