In the US state of California, with rents soaring and wages not keeping up, finding a place to live is becoming increasingly difficult. In some counties, a number of employees - the "working poor" - even end up homeless and are forced to sleep in their vehicles. Our France 2 colleagues report, with FRANCE 24's James Vasina.
A programme prepared by Patrick Lovett and Gaëlle Essoo.

Why is living in a car illegal honestly? Because you can’t charge them for doing it?

"Living in a car is illegal", illegal should be the high priced rents.

“Lives in her car with her daughter, who is too embarrassed about her situation to speak to us”

*Proceeds to record her*

"This kid is too embarrassed to do an interview, so we'll show her face to the whole world instead."

"Rent prices have soared and wages aren't keeping up" is definitely correct!

It's illegal to sleep in a car. But it's legal to sleep on the street? I guess it's a lot easier to make laws than actually help people.

So it is "illegal" to sleep in your *own* car. But the Government *REFUSES* to help them find *affordable* housing.

I was unemployed for a period of time and was almost homeless. Thank God my brother took me in and now that I'm back on my feet, I'm forever grateful to him and his family.

But everybody blames us and we work work work work work. We're really working for NOTHING.

Really inappropriate to show the daughter, especially if she was too embarrassed to speak to the camera crew.

They call it homelessness and embarrassing, meanwhile youtubers call it van life and make six figures documenting it. The world is strange.

The human condition on this planet is sad.
Debt, stress, famine, poverty, depression. Throw the whole world away. 😓

“Neither the university or her boss is aware of her living situation”. Well I’m sure they saw it now.

The last woman is mentally very strong. At her age, no children, no home, and starting a new business - wow what a challenge! Wish all of them all the best, life is not always easy.
Greetings from France
