So I tried it myself but the link it gave me always says "this site can't be reached" if I use it on browser. So how would my friends connect? Does it only work if my LAN is already active? Do they need to type the link into Minecraft or type the local address?

Do the steps same exactly as shown here then then on your other laptop ( yeah if you really wanna play it you gotta do little work ) you will be able to see name and the ip.of owner in multi-player, then click a picture of it and send it to your friend, then he/she will type it in join server and then it will work
