1979 Oldsmobile 98 Recency Junkyard Find. I stopped by my local pick n pull to check out this 1979 Olds 98. Shame it was junked as it was a straight car with minimal issues that I could see. Yes it was a 4 door but still not a a bad car at all. It was sporting the 403 under the hood and looked to be all there. Underneath it was pretty clean with no rust. Just another old car that nobody wanted, i guess. I still think someone would have paid a little more for it than the yard.

This one hits close to home. Drove one for 14-15 years. Most reliable car I ever had. Never should've got rid of it. 😭

My parents had a '79 Olds 98 Regency sedan when I was a toddler. It was gray with a teal blue interior. The only thing I remember about it was that it rode very smooth and was super quiet. As soon as they put me in the car seat, I was out like a lamp.

Wow a 403 in the yard! That's a hot ticket item even if it needs to be rebuilt. That is a very desirable olds engine because it is a direct replacement for a olds 260, 307, and 350. The 455 uses different accessory brackets because of the taller deck height but the 403 is the short deck and they are pretty good performers and pull really good down low and you can install it into an all original car that had a 260 or 307and no one would know it's got a hot motor in it.

VIN is 3 for Oldsmobile, X for 98 Regency, 69 for 4 door, K for 403 "L80" Olds V8 with 4 barrel (same used in the Trans Am in 1979), 9 for 1979 model year, M for Lansing, MI assembly plant (the "home" Olds plant) and the rest is the production sequence. That should be the original windshield a LOF (Libbey Owens Ford) "Safety Flo-Lite" which is correct for AC equipped cars. I think those seats aren't original. They appear to be from an '84 era Olds rear driver. My '84 Delta 88 Royale Brougham has those same seats. I think in '79, the "pillow" pattern was different and the brown color doesn't match the rest of the interior either. That master cylinder was replaced, you can see the yellow reman mark, likely supplied to them by A-1 Cardone Industries. No trim tag shown, but I'm going to be a betting man and say that was the original color and likely the original paint. With some effort, this hooptie could be road worthy again.

The seats were pulled from a Delta 88 Royale Brougham. The Regency seats were more plush and would have been the same color as the gold fabric on the door panels. It was a nice car in its day. Slick top is very rare on these cars.

My guess is that the previous owner didn't change the oil very often, which explains the gunky oil. From the kitchen knife in the engine bay, I guess that Rich Rebuilds was lookin for a new EV conversion project. The hell was he doin in Texas? Lol
Yard Should've made SOME effort in trying to sell this whole, it's way too nice! Ah, was it missin the keys and title as well?

I gotta say that the bumpers held up nicely. Here in Jersey those Oldsmobile bumpers don't fair to well. They rust but most of them just fall off.

Are you sure that was an 8 1/2” 10 bolt? That may have been the 8 7/8” 10 bolt cover rear with a 12 bolt carrier. I think it was called the MP 78 that was built by Pontiac and used mainly in full sized cars from the mid 60s up to about 1982. They had 31 spline axles until 77 when they were dropped to 28. That rear is pretty stout but unfortunately it isn’t supported at all by the aftermarket. It was about as strong as a standard 12 bolt GM but except for high performance full size cars in the 60s and select few oddball 73 and up high performance midsize cars, they were basically station wagon and land yacht fare. I saw one once in a rare 73 Buick Century Grand Sport factory Stage 1 car with a 4 speed.

Those opera lights ran on 120 volts. Here in NJ anything older than 2000 is rusted to death. Amazing to see these old turds, sad they are going to scrap.
