My biggest flathead is 58 pounds. According to Infishermen, the Kaw River is the most likely place to find a world record flathead. I love flathead fishing they are very fun to catch. I release them. Great video

In the 1980s i visted Bagnel dam fir the first time. It was August and only one spillway was open. I was below the dam enjoying watching the two dozen long nose gar right below me. Then in the center of the spillway pool, two catfish came to the surface. Close enough that their backs broke the surface once. Both of them looked everybit of six feet long. I watchd in jaw drop amazment for 20 minutes. I am not saying they will never be caught, but fisherman are not allowed to get too close to the back of that dam which has been their since 1939.

The largest flathead on record is a 139 pound 14 ounce fish from Arkansas. It was weighed on certified scales mounted and displayed at the fair for awhile. It was caught in the Arkansas river on a snag line so did not qualify for any records, but what a beast. You can look up the details on line. I live 2 hours from Elk city. We have a lot of lakes tjat give up 80+ pound flattys every year. Most guys don’t tell. I weighed an 82 a couple of years ago for some friends because we have certified scales. The buffalo that was found in the world record was 28” long and estimated to be about 14 pounds, there was an In Fisherman article about it. A guy I use to know caught a 68 out of Toronto lake Kansas and it had a 4 pound buffaloe, a 6 pound carp and a 4 pound drum in it’s stomach. They eat big baits, and studies show that large ones feed an average of 1 hour a day, sometimes going a week without eating.

Back in the day when the record was caught down south of me I heard that it was caught/snagged on light line and a crappie jig in the spillway. It has been rumored there are several lakes back up here where I live that there are bigger flatheads than the record but nobody really targets them. I'm friends with the guy that has the record blue cat for kansas. Him and another friend that just recently passed away were on the river and had to pull anchor and let the blue pull the boat for a half a mile to wear it out. It was also released after being certified.

The question is how many have been caught that no one ever knew about? Lots of catfish were telephoned back in the 70’s and 80’s. Bunch of those fish were giants and no one ever heard about it because it was illegally caught.

I know that their are bigger fish than that out there, because I have heard divers that talk about fish they have seen while diving. These divers job is to clean the outlets and inlets of a local dam and they have seen fish bigger than this one.

Facts about record size catfish are that they are the few. Also that they don't eat as often as smaller ones.. Also a large food fish or water bird like a coot takes longer to digest than a smaller fish. Also while they eat large items, they likely mostly eadt fish the size of a full-grown gizzard shad or skipjack herring. This would include carp and suckers (including buffalo) the size of a full-grown gizzard shad or skipjack herring. Also record size catfish are excessively thick-bodied and obese-looking that would make them less energetic and become easier prey for bull sharks and alligators/ So the best river environments would be farther north than the latitude of Louisiana and in lakes without barge locks that easily allow bull sharks to migrate farther upstrean for pupping their young in a relatively predator-free environment. In such an environment, big old catfish don't have any appreciable pressure from predators and can live in the comfort of home to a ripe old age.

Make no mistake about it, there are some catfisherman out there using baits that big and suspending below the boat at different depths

We have 2 Tied 83lb flatheads on the altamaha river and there are definitely ones 100 pounds but hard to catch and the DNR shocking them and trying to get rid of them hurts their population it's nothing to catch 30 40 50 pounders but gotta know we're to go and when.. Great video 👊😎

Yeah I don't see how a crappie line probably ten lb test at the most and crappie real and pole could have handled that

Where do you guys think the next world record Flathead Catfish will come out of?!? 🤔

I think the record will be broken by a fish from a power plant cooling lake. My home lake was formed in the 70's to cool a nuke plant. Hybrid stripers and hybrid Musky were the lipstick they used to sell the pig. When those species died off without being re-stocked, the shad population exploded, and the lake transitioned into a grade A Flathead and Channel fishery.

My best friend David Wolley from chanute ks was there. He said it was flaling choking on about a 5 lb carp.Which goes with what they found in stomach. He was told that day by people who witnessed catch that day after.Thing is he snagged it YES but he snagged it in lower lip.Revord catchers cousin lives in chanute claims same story.

2016 I cought a flathead that weighed 108 lbs but it was caught in a hoop net so it was disqualified for any kind of record here in Louisiana

I don't know. If there are multiple 100 pound flatheads out there you would think people would find a dead one every now and then. Back in the 60s the Republican river in south central Nebraska ran dry and my dad found one that he said would have weighed 100 pounds. I wouldn't doubt him since he's caught a lot of big flatheads
