Everything you need to know about Final Fantasy 12's new remaster. We've got comparisons between PS2, PS4 and PS4 Pro - and yes, we emulated the original code at 1080p to get a detailed picture of what the enhancements are above the resolution bump!

The game looks pretty beautiful still. It's living proof that a stylized and well directed art is lot more future proof than pure and simple photorealism.

I'm playing FFXII on my PS2 with component cables and tbh I was shocked that the game looked so well and aged so good, one of my favourite FF

This game was already one of the best looking games on ps2

Glad to see you taking a look at PCSX2 as well. It's interesting to see how these remasters stack up to emulation.

This is still my favorite FF by a mile. Put over 200 hours into it back in the day and I can't wait to play it again.

Forcing anisotropic filtering and trilinear filtering in PCSX2 would likely have made quite a lot of the textures look a bit better (not massively, but still noticeable). Also having PCSX2 render above your resolution and scale down further improves quality (as it basically works as a form of antialiasing).

the PS Pro support for this is abysmal!

Did you know PCSX2 was initially released in 2002. Whereas FF12 on 2006. I just wanna say thank you to everyone who contributed to the 15 years of development and continued to do so. Emulators, saving game since forever.

As for the "Moody look", I think you're partly right in that the lighting model has changed and they may be using updated shaders, and better lighting algos altogether, tho a lot of the included darkness may be a sign that they have realtime ambient occlusion at work this time around.

FFXII might be the best looking PS2 games.

Let's be honest high framerate is not at all necessary to enjoy an RPG like this...

For everyone who says this game is stupid cause it doesn't run at 60 fps, you obviously didn't watch the video. "You'll note that Square Enix design the titles specifically around 30 fps. It's not just graphics that run at that frame rate, but also the core gameplay mechanics as well. So if you uncap the frame rate there is the potential for the game to break and unusual stuff to happen, such as some things running at twice the speed and some thing just not running correctly at all".

Thank you DF for this analysis. I'm glad that Sony and SE released this remaster for the PS4, this imo is the best RPG on PS2 gameplay wise. Now I'm waiting for SE to re-release the remastered complete FFXIII saga. Wouldn't it be nice if SE remakes Vagrant Story from the ground up?

Nice job on the comparison through PCSX2. Normally it's hard to tell texture differences from an old 480p video compared to a 1080p video but rendering it through emulation is an excellent idea and I hope you guys do it more often with remaster graphic comparisons :)

Ff XV - 1800P CB plus extras
FF XII Old Ps2 Game - 1440p

Lmao devs aren't even trying.

What? I expected 4k 60fps on Pro. Its a remaster of PS2 game. What the hell? And that pop-in. And it costs 50$.

Is it just me or does the jump from PS2 to PS3 seem vastly larger (in terms of graphical/performance power) than PS3 to PS4?

Took my the old CRT with component inputs from the attic and looks better on real PS2 than any Pcsx2 or PS4 Pro, 4KTV, OLed... You name it, period.

Their skin tones always felt off in the original. Looked pasty and corpse like. glad they fixed it. looking forward to replaying one of my favorite PS2 games (yes I liked it more than X)
