One of Square Enix's crowning triumphs of the PS2 era is back in a further updated release. Nintendo Switch brings the portable goods, while Xbox One X is unique for offering 60fps on console - though with a catch. Tom covers all.

Game is almost like 15 years old now and it still looks so modern. Talk about quality assets, art and design.

Playing it right now on Switch. It's a great port! Load times are especially quick and image quality holds up in handheld.

Portable FF12 really is the way to go. Remember that the original PS2 was a 480p resolution, anything above it is a good improvement.

Ff12 portable is worth any price, I was heartbroken when they didn't release it on vita way back when. But I'm a happy camper now! Already put 20 hours in and loving it.

Loved the battle system in XII. Amazing to see it on a portable system.

Wow. This is absolutely a phenomenal comparison. I am only NOW finding out that these two games released physically on Switch, so I want to get my hands on them.
I really appreciate that you showed the footage of each in unison and didn't give a bias to the Series X, but respected each platform in their own right. Outstanding work!

Man, that 60 FPS is very noticeable. Combat looks much smoother on the XBOX ONE X

It is weird to see old games today. When I was young my Imagination filled all the pixelated gaps. For Instance in Halo 1 the Jungle Map. I still have in my mind that it was a really dense forest but in reality it does not look remotely like a forest. I hope that the kids today who play with the Switch Version of old games have the same Imagination like we did in past.

RE FFX: thank you! I was absolutely sure it looked much sharper on One X than when I played it on base PS4, but people kept telling me it wasn't really enhanced. I thought I was losing my marbles.

Unless you are already playing on a 4k display, I find the difference between switch and other consoles to be not that big when playing, the difference in resolution doesn't interfere much with the experience if you are not directly comparing versions. The option to play on the go stand out for me, but that only matters if you like RPGs on the go.

It would be god tier if you could also cover Crystal Chronicles when it comes out.

I remember playing this game on the ps2 for the first time. It surprised me how the ps2 could handle the graphics without any performance drop. Good game overall. Thanks for the analysis DF!

Can't believe they couldnt achieve 60 FPS on most systems... even on Switch it should be realistic to achieve. Needing an ONE X to run a former PS2 game at 60 FPS is a real shame

Well, I was already going to get it on Switch. This is just icing on the cake.

It's really crazy how far technology has come. I still remember at the beginning of gen 8 when 3DS and Vita launched. While those systems looked good for the time, they were still a good ways below the PS3 and 360 in many ways. While Switch is definitely below the vanilla PS4 and vanilla XB1, unlike Vita and 3DS when compared to PS3 and 360, Switch is strong enough to get ports from XB1 and PS4 and in most cases, while there's always a difference between versions, the Switch versions are usually not far off. This is just another example of this.

On top of this though, this is using a Tegra X1, aka, a chip from 2015. Tegra chips have gotten a lot more powerful since then. If a new Switch launches in 2020 with a Tegra chip from 2018, like the Xavier or Orin, that could be a pretty sizable jump.

Performance is more important than resolution in my opinion so I'm really happy the X version runs at 60 fps. It looks the best in this regard.
