This was exactly what I needed. For some reason plex media server could access my TV shows and music but not the movies. Adding the plex user in the ACL fixed that. Thank you very much!

Thank you for the helpful tutorial. I have been using Plex for several years on a PC and it works great. I just did this install on my new TrueNAS box, and it worked fine. I needed to add a custom DLNA profile to get it to talk to my Yamaha receiver, but it was a bit of a nightmare to copy the file into the Profile directory. You will need to go to the jail and from the shell inside the jail, enable write permissions to the Profiles directory, then make an SMB share to the "iocage" folder. From there, you can copy the profile. Now, everything works great!

Thank you for the tutorial, it was very informative. Just one thing though, at about timestamp 08:24 you show the UID of plex as 987 but you were previously talking about (07:01) creating a user with a UID of 972. I have had a look around and everything else seems to point to a UID of 972 so maybe this was just a typo?

Person who wrote the Plex permissions blog post here. The reason I went with the ID method is to save the reader the time it takes to create the user manually. In older versions of FreeNAS pre-ACL editor, you did need to create the user manually since it needed to show up in a drop down. It's completely unnecessary here since in essence it's just running setfacl with the ID. Setting an ACL for the group is also completely unnecessary in this case.

Something I would in the future like to get all the media plugins running as the same group, which for most of them is just an /etc/rc.conf entry. All that would be required then is an ACL entry for that group and all your plugins would have the proper permissions. You could even fine tune it by adding specific deny permissions for some users since deny takes precedence over allow.

If you intend to allow Plex to 'optimise' your media then you'll need to allow read/write to the dataset as it creates the Plex Versions folder with the media.

Thanks for this. An FYI for those using Windows. I already had the it mapped and was constantly getting permission errors. Remove the drive and remapping fixed the issue (after ACL setup)
