Setup SMB + ACL on TrueNAS CORE 12 | 4K TUTORIAL

This tutorial goes over how to setup SMB Shares on TrueNAS CORE 12 as well as User Permissions (ACLs). SMB is by far the most preferred protocol for connecting to files as it works great with Windows, Mac and Linux!

This is EXACTLY what I needed to see!
A couple comments on the presentation:
1. You went through this slow enough that someone not familiar with TrueNAS could follow it!
2. No annoying music in the background which makes the speaker difficult to follow.
3. Enough detail that I can now set this up...it's not really intuitive
EXCELLENT presentation! Thank YOU!

thank you. i was able to get all the way to writing files to my share when i got stuck....your explanation of the ownership/group cascading alongside an extra ACL setting allowed it to work! now im not pulling my hair out anymore!!!

Thank you so much! I tried following multiple articles to set this up and none of them worked successfully. I appreciate you making this concise and to the point with just the exact info needed. Truenas UI is awful, it is amazing how difficult it is to do something so simple. Yea there are a billion options / security features, but there should be a much less complex way to configure a share.

Thank you so much, I tried so many videos to get these permissions working and none of them worked correctly or more to the point nobody was able to clearly walk through the steps. Your video worked within minutes and I was able to understand at least at a minimum where i was messing up, and now I'm good to go. Thank you very much....

You earned a sub. TrueNas + SMB is a PITA!

Short and to the point. I've seen several videos explaining in granular detail what everything does. I just needed to know how to get my permissions going. Thank you.

Perfect!!! I had about given up on this! I struggled through it the first time on my box, then I went to create one for someone else, and I couldn't remember how I had done it the first time. Don't forget to click the Apply Group checkbox! That was what I was missing the whole time, so it never got applied. Seriously frustrating! Thanks for the video!

I have been having some problem with Time machine (AFP share) when upgraded to TrueNAS Core 12.0. Would be great if you could make a tutorial on setting up a time machine on TrueNAS Core 12.0. Again thank you for your efforts. It's really helped me setting up my system. Cheers and have a great festive season!

Great video! Highly appreciated! How do SMB permission play a role in all of this? (Sharing - SMB - Share Permissions). Better to leave them on defaults? Because I can also set some stuf there.

hey man, thanks for this video! Is there a way to allow permissions for SMB to modify files in Nextcloud dataset?

Well you just broke it more for me thanks.

Weird I had the exact opposite effect with on vs off. Speeds consistently 6x faster with sync off. At least for a drag and drop copy of a large file

What is the right way to do permissions (if there is one?). I ended up just adding my user to the wheel group on all datasets and add others users per acl on their datatsets... or let me ask: what is the prarical difference between changin the owner/group or adding acls?

Why I use your examples works first day. The next day after reboot my PC, when I open the mapped drive I get Network Error access. What change or gives? How does windows know what is your default user to TrueNAS dataset?

Any idea how to setup FTP? I've been through the settings and did testing with dummy user accounts. None worked. Just want to be able to access my plex media via FTP & SMB

Some time ago I managed to share my dataset through my local network with my Windows 11 PC, but what I want now is to have access to my network drive from any computer in the world with Internet access. How do I do that? I'm no expert, in fact I'm still learning the basic terminology.
