5 reasons to LOVE calendula…

🧡 it’s cleansing, stimulating the channels of elimination through its lymphatic action
🧡 it’s vulnerary, healing tissues and speeding their replication on a cellular level
🧡 it’s bitter, supporting the digestive process and improving nutrient absorption
🧡 it has been traditionally used as an immune tonic and is a strong antiviral
🧡 it’s anti-inflammatory, supporting the resolution of inflammation externally and internally

Calendula is a fabulous herb to include in any home apothecary! It can be used in many different ways, including as a tincture, which is portable, long lasting, and easy to use.

Here’s how you can make your fresh calendula tincture. It is a fluffy herb, so it can be hard to fully submerge in the menstruum, but I’ve got a trick for you! Using a blender reduces the volume of the herb, so it can be fully soaked, and increases surface area for a better extraction.

INGREDIENTS
🌼 calendula (Calendula officinalis) flowers, fresh
🌼 140 proof alcohol (or higher)

Because of its high water content, fresh calendula should be tinctured at a ratio of 1:2, which means you will want to use 1 oz of herb per 2 fl oz of menstruum, at 140 proof alcohol or above.

🍃 Place the alcohol in a blender along with ½ the fresh calendula and turn the blender on. Once it has blended into a pulp, add the other ½ of the herb and blend again.
🍃 Let it macerate in a sealed jar for 4-6 weeks, shaking daily, before straining using a fine-mesh sieve and cheesecloth.
🍃 Transfer the liquid into a bottle, label and store it in a cool, dark place, where it will last 3-5 years.
