reminds me of how my great grandfather (who was born in Germany) moved to the US in 1934, and in 1941 enlisted in the US military (I couldn’t find anything on which branch he was in) and was deployed on the western front, and there’s a high chance he may have served in D-day and possibly was fighting in the heart of Germany later in the war.
