An Introduction to Complex Numbers: Oxford Mathematics 1st Year Student Lecture

Much is written about life as an undergraduate at Oxford but what is it really like? As Oxford Mathematics's new first-year students arrive (273 of them, comprising 33 nationalities) we thought we would take the opportunity to go behind the scenes and share some of their experiences.

Our starting point is a first week lecture for the first year students. In this case the second lecture from 'An Introduction to Complex Numbers' by Dr. Vicky Neale. The lecture aims to both consolidate what has already been learnt at school and prepare students for the next stage. All first and second year lectures are followed by tutorials where students meet their tutor to go through the lecture and associated problem sheet and to talk and think more about the maths. Third and fourth year lectures are followed by classes.

I only understood that the board can be moved up and down.

Vicky was my student. I taught her this stuff in Further Maths A Level in 2001. No really I did. She always loved Maths. It was clear from the start she was way smarter than me though. So proud to see her here.

Gotta tell my sons/daughters in the future that I attended a class in Oxford

She just proved one after another proposition nonstop, without a break, without referencing books
This smooth real-time prove process is really satisfying

I feel bad if someone blinks...
One blink, you’ve fallen waaaay behind..
Yawn, might as well drop out...

To people moaning about her teaching, the students in this class already know this, so it’s just revision. She’s a very good teacher

She is teaching complex number in a complex way.

This just proved my decision right again: persuing meths instead of maths

The only thing I understood is that her writing speed is directly proportional to her speech.

Lecturer: there are no coincidence in math.
Me: seeing an oxford calculus lecture recommendation in youtube when I suck at math is a coincident, right?

I was with her up to "Morning everyone, we're on..." and then things get a little hazy before I'm totally lost.
