I heard we didn’t have a word for a black person…because before we were discovered by the western world …every black or darker skin individual was Samoan …it was introduced to us or the idea was foreign …never had that word until the foreigners came with that mentality …everyone was the same before

Papuans were brought over to work on the plantations in Samoa and this derogatory attitude towards these "meauli" was passed down to the Samoans. see in the European mindset, the Polynesian was a noble savage whereas the "blacks" were looked upon less favourably. plenty of European sailors journals from these times that more or less contain these attitudes.

We are a dark skinned people. Look at the old photos of Samoans n Tongans, dark, bronze skin with kinky hair. The picture of the first modern day king of Tonga looks like a black man.

I concur with you Uce...just like Television, Spoon or bus...and a whole bunch of words. The Samoan language is limited in many ways, as we say it. Mativa o le gagana. I can tell you're a son of a Tamali'i. So you know our words. Faatamali'i a fanau a Tamali'i. Stay up and stay safe Uce. Much Alofas 💚🙏🏽💪🏾🤙🏽
