The mourning dove (Zenaida macroura) is a member of the dove family, Columbidae. The bird is also known as the American mourning dove, the rain dove, and colloquially as the turtle dove, and was once known as the Carolina pigeon and Carolina turtledove. It is one of the most abundant and widespread of all North American birds and a popular gamebird, with more than 20 million birds (up to 70 million in some years) shot annually in the U.S., both for sport and meat. Its ability to sustain its population under such pressure is due to its prolific breeding; in warm areas, one pair may raise up to six broods of two young each in a single year. The wings make an unusual whistling sound upon take-off and landing, a form of sonation. The bird is a strong flier, capable of speeds up to 88 km/h (55 mph).

The misty mornings of summers way back when, when I'd wake up earlier than the rest of the house and see my room filled with rays of cold honey, and hear the near calls of those beautiful birds. I'd fall back asleep with such tranquility, I miss those moments a lot.

Anyone think it is odd how we all one day just stopped hearing them but we all can correlate them with growing up and in our childhood? Like I swear I haven’t heard these birds in years.

When I was a kid my friends and I were convinced this sound was an owl, so we would go marching through the woods trying to find a big owl somewhere lol. Love the sound of the mourning dove.

pov its a hot summer mourning around 7:30, you wake up hearing this bird and see the sun glare through your blinds, you smell the food your parents are making, and you just already know it is gonna be a good day.

I have a beautiful Dove that is approximately 28 years old, and when he hears this recording you have made,
He bursts into song. I wish you could hear him as I am typing. As for me it brings a quiet peacefulness to
my soul. We live alone and each of us receive a spiritual emotional experience. I thank you. Each of us
are old, should he pass before me, your recording, will tears with beautiful memories.

When children born between 2000-2005 got up in the morning, it was a beautiful day for this bird to sing and the cool air to come through the window on the weekend🥹

When you’re a kid you listen more to the stuff you hear outside, as you get older, you focus less on unimportant things, but in those moments when you look back on the past, these noises are what we remember the most 😢

Nostalgic sounds for North Americans: Mourning dove
Nostalgic sounds for Europeans and North Africans: Eurasian collared dove
I love how in two different continents, it's a dove that stimulates the feeling of nostalgia at a misty summer morning.. 🕊❤

I rescued a mourning dove yesterday from the claws of a hawk. I know it is the cycle of life but I love these birds and I couldn't just watch it happen. I nursed it back to health and today she flew away. Hope she is doing well flying up in the sky.

Its very comforting to see the amount of people who have this bird call cemented in their childhood memories like I do, I didn't realize how many people had the same experience.

COVID was a time of Chaos for many, but for me, it was my last memory of this bird. We had moved into my grandmas who lived in the country to escape COVID. I remember waking up one morning, the warm sun shining onto my face. My room faced the east, so I would wake up every morning to the sun. I looked out the open window that was left open the night before to cool the house down. To the left, a small row of thick pine trees blocked my view of the north side of the road. Another small cherry tree sat outside the window. Across the vacant road was what I cared about. As far as the eye could see, a field of golden wheat sat, swaying in the gentle breeze. I could hear the mourning dove cooing in the north, most likely in the windbreak of pine trees. It was a sense of tranquility, and happiness. I scarcely hear the bird now, but it brings back that vivid summer memory when all I cared about was what my grandma was downstairs cooking for breakfast that morning…
