One part of Cyprus mourns, the other rejoices 50 years after split

A divided Cyprus is marking the war that began on July the 20th 1974. But as one side mourns its loss and the other celebrates a military victory - 50 years on, reconciliation seems a long way off.

As a Turkish Cypriot i am on the side who supports Turkeys intervention. My family are refugees they had to leave their home and land which is now under the control of so called Cyprus Republic which Tutkish cypriots were kicked out of. As Turks have learned strong army means protection, peace and stability. We all folow Atatürk and in any threat or foreign invasion we are willing to give our lives for our country. We dont need help from any country we are proud strong nation.

There is no need for a two state solution, Cyprus is greek and should be ruled by them once again. Before the Turkish invasion 50 years ago, most of Northern Cyprus was majority greek. Turks aren't native to it, and if they don't want live under greek rule, they should go back to Turkey.

The reality is not clearly portrayed by Al Jazeera. The truth is that many Turkish Cypriots do not want Turkeys influence in the North ; which is more and more populated by settlers. On the Greek Cypriot side many non refugees and the young generation do not care about the Cyprus problem and prefer the status quo (although they do not express it openly)

This is a biased report. Missing Turks accepting Coffee Annan lead UN resolution with referendum and Greeks rejecting it. This situation will continue to be a problem until Greeks comes to terms with Turks’ presense and their rights in Cyprus and Eastern Mediterranean. The Cyprus problem was not created by the Turks in the first place and Turks cannot be blamed for protecting their rights by themselves and themselves only.

Everyone Cyprus is a Greek majority Island with about 20% minority of Turkish Cypriots brothers.
These brothers is the true sense ( many are greek descent don't argue this the Turkish Cypriots know this and do not dispute it) most want Turkey to stop interfering so they can negotiate a lasting peace so all can live together as they once did before everyone started planting stupid ideas in their heads like what is happening now.

We need to remember that Cyprus was under British control and once Cypriots started to demand independence, the British turned the Greek and Turkish populations against each other in order to destabilise the independence movement. And once independence was achieved the right faction who wanted unification with Greece were in dispute with the left faction who just wanted independence. The coup by the right gave Turkey the excuse to invade. What a terrible mistake. I would love to see a unified Cyprus (Greek and Turkish Cypriots living together once more). I blame the British for what happened 50 years ago. We shouldn’t further pit the Greek and Turkish populations against each other.

before the island was rented to the biritish (big mistake) Turkish population was much higher than any others who lived in the land. this population shift carried on until 1974. in early 60's makarios government was actually giving the turks free pasports to live the island. australia, canada, england and Turkiye were the main countries who signed the agreement to receive such refuges!..! am one of them!..my father's family were 8 brothers and sisters and 5 of them moved to london. my village was about 600 people, 400 of them gone away! it is good for you to talk about you being more than us and all that but one has to read and learn the facts. another fact is that you greeks has never ever had ruled over cyprus. you were not even allowed freely to practice your religion until Turks took the island from venetians and gave you all that freedom but you people turned around and paid us back since Biritish annexed the land to Britain. you also killed 1000's of innocent turks in 1974..another fact remains valid today that you lot also include your dead people whenever there is a short, Cyprus which was ruled by different suzerains, but which never in its entire history came under Greek rule, was conquered by the Ottomans in 1571 and ruled by them until 1878 when it was rented for 49 years.
