When we hire a new employee, we can focus on the administrative tasks. We ensure the W-9, payroll paperwork is signed. However, we have to onboard our new staff member as if they are a customer. The way we welcome a new team member says how we onboard a new client.

Here are a couple of things to include in the onboarding process:

Have an SOP (Standard Operating Procedures). This is a fancy word for a “written” document detailing how to do the work. Be very clear on deadlines and results.

Have a training plan. This can be a checklist that can be shared with the new employee. The checklist will allow everyone to be on the same page. Enlist an experienced team member to train.

Create an open communication environment. Check-in with the new staff member. Respond to emails, create 1:1 meetings with the new staff, and encourage other team members to assist.

I recommend before hiring a new staff member perform a review of your employee onboarding process. Also if you currently have staff, ask for their input.

First impressions say a lot. Ensure the new team member is equipped with the tools to succeed.
