My dad, American, was taken prisoner in early 1945. He said that the first hours of being taken prisoner were the most dangerous. Your captors had to decide whether they had time and manpower to take prisoners to the rear.

The question is: What happened to those SS men, after they were captured? Film of them with hands on their heads doesn’t necessarily mean they made it home.

Problem is that there are numerous accounts, including interviews on film, when Veterans of WW2 talk about being told not to take prisoners on D-day.

My uncle was at Carpiquet and fought the 12th SS. He was quite clear that the Canadians killed german prisoners both before and after the atrocity committed by the 12th SS. It was done, and although the Officers forbade it, too much cruelty on both sides made it inevitable.

I knew a gentleman from Halifax wh fought the Hitler Jugand in Caen. He was a 26 year old black kid from Halifax. Wounded twice. Once at Juno were a machine gun round went through his cheek and tore out part of his tongue. He went right back into the front 2 weeks later. Fought in Caen were he said it was apparent the Hitler Youth gave no quarter nd expected none.. So many Canadians obliged them. He was wounded again after chasing the SS out of the area, but this time the Germans took him prisoner. He ended up in a Stalg where he punched the Xamp Commandrr in the face after being called racial slurs. Ended up in confinement but the guards who hated their Prussian Commander kept him drunk in Schnapps and well feed with sausage. He later guarded Kurt Myer at the end of the war. He aais he ws a very arrogant man but the guards would taunt him by saying he was being handed over to the Russians when the paper work was completed. Not so arrogant after that.... Never happened .. they were just scrwing with his head!

What we’re witnessing here is the initial surrender and or capture on the battlefield, it gets somewhat tricky for them to go to the POW encampment in the rear, I mean things can get a little complicated…

“This is clearly not the case”, as we see here they let 4 12th SS men live to tell the tail!

He is right about the "lot of misinformation": a photo of prisoners doesn't mean they weren't killed afterwards.
This does Not show that "this is clearly not the case".
Another Amateur on youtube...

It makes a good myth, I’m sure in certain sections and platoons it may be true.

I've read, and heard statements from veterans, categorically stating that it was common practice to NEVER take S. S. prisoners, I don't care what you choose to believe!

There was a lot of, "take no prisoners, " orders...on both sides.

My Dad went ashore on D-day. He rarely spoke about it. Although once he mentioned that after the slaughter they Gut shot the SS on sight!
